Does your Tamron 90 macro have a focus motor in the lens. That's what AF-S is referring to. If your lens has no focus motor then it will not do automatic in camera stacks.

I've done auto stacking (using a tethering program) with my Tamron 180 F3.5 macro (no lens AF motor), but it does not work with my Sigma 150 F2.8 macro (HSM focus motor - similar to AF-S Silent Wave). Whether a lens an internal motor or not is irrelevant to whether you can do auto stacking. It depends upon how the lens' firmware communicates with the camera. Each lens should be tested individually.

The lens motor is required for lenses and camera bodies that do not have a focus motor, such as Nikon D 3xxxs, D5xxxs, and Zs.

Correct. I was describing those lenses on bodies I've used that had AF drives built in - D300, D700, D3S, D800, D810.
