Once upon a time, there was a happy and productive ant who came to work early every day. She spent all her day working in joy and good humor, even pushing the ditty.

She was happy to work and her performance was excellent but, woe! She was not driven by a manager ...

The Hornet, CEO of the company, considering that it was not possible that the situation can continue, created a managerial position for which he recruited a Ladybug with a lot of experience.

The first concern of the Ladybug was to organize the Ant's entry and exit schedules. She also created a system of reports and shuttles. Soon, it took a secretary to help prepare the files and reporting, so she recruited a spider that set up a filing system and was responsible for answering the phone. During that time, the happy and productive Ant continued to work, work, and work.

Hornet, CEO of the company, was delighted to receive the reports of the Ladybug, so he asked him for comparative studies with charts, indicators and trend analysis. It was therefore necessary to hire a cockroach to assist the manager and it was necessary to buy a new computer with a printer.
Soon enough, the happy and productive Ant began to lose pace and complain about all the paperwork that is now imposed on it. The Hornet, CEO of the company, considered it was time to take action. He created the position of chief of service to oversee the happy and productive Ant.

The post was filled by a Cicada who changed all the furniture in his office and asked for a new ergonomic chair and a new computer with a flat screen. Only, with several computers, it was also necessary to install a network server. The new head of department quickly felt the need to recruit a deputy (who was his assistant in his former company) to prepare a strategic management plan and the budget of his new service. Meanwhile, the Ant was less and less happy and less and less productive.

"We will soon have to order a study on the social climate," says La Cigale. But, one day, the Hornet, CEO of the company, examining the numbers, realized that the service in which the happy and productive Ant works was not as profitable as before. He, therefore, used the services of a prestigious consultant, Mr Hibou, to make a diagnosis and provide solutions. The Owl made a three-month mission to the company, after which he gave his report: "There are too many people in this service". The Hornet, CEO of the company, followed his recommendations and ... dismissed the Ant!

Morality:
Never dream of being a happy and productive ant. It is better to be incompetent and to be useless. The incompetent do not need a supervisor, what would be useful because everyone knows it! If, despite everything, you are productive, do not show that you are happy at work, we will not forgive you. If you insist on being a happy and productive Ant, set up your own business: at least you will not have to support the Hornet, Ladybug, Spider, Cicada, Owl and other Cockroach.

It takes a government to screw up a free lunch.

go read the stories of the founding fathers who worked tirelessly to draft our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Then you will see what we have had for two centuries and still has no equal.

Same when I was a volunteer at a state park. We got loads of work done until they decided they needed to supervise our meetings. Productivity immediately went down to about 10%.

You are apparently describing the managerial structure of a university--and lots of other entities as well.

From what I've observed, most of a company's problems are caused by management.

well said..... the more management a company has the less production it gets from it's worker ants, i mean workers. our company fired most managers and workers seemed to be more diligent and happy. no one looking over our shoulders, except one supervisor who acted as a spy... he soon was set straight.

It will be interesting to see what The House of Representatives will do.

My son worked for a company which had a small management section. Great effort was made to make sure that ALL heads knew what was going on. Rational, just and intelligent decisions thus followed. Their profit margin was high and all shared in it. Company was bought out, forced leverage, I think it is called, by a company twice its size. Poor management and top heavy, plus small profit margin. After a year under this new owner, many staff cuts, reduced output, failing enthusiasm, and dread of being next to be dismissed.
Management is necessary, good management is essential.

The job of management is to give "the ant" the tools and autonomy to do their job and then get out of the way.

The "ant pool" is sorely lacking.

I worked for a company that hired outside consultants to study the companies workforce. They found too many management levels. Companies response to the problem: move your subordinates up to your level but they still report to you. Fewer LEVELS but the same number of managers! They also decided that we needed to work 48 hours a week instead of 40. After a month of this, a directive was issued that stated that if you could get your 48 hours done in 40, you could work a 40 hour week. HUH???
