As usual, much very useful information from the Hoggers. I do not use a beanbagbut I really like the idea of the split pipe insulation. I will certainly give it a try.

As you know a bag is the way to when using a tripod is impractical. Just don’t forget to turn off the engine.

And in some cases the radio. My Jeep came with a ridiculous sound system that supposedly has 3 subwoofers. With the volume turned down low I can feel vibration even with the engine off. It didn't take long to realise it was having an effect on the images. Nixon's VR is no match for a Jeep.

Thank you for the tip. I usually turn off the engine but due to the extreme cold weather, I have the heater going.

Just curious as to why it is important to turn off the engine? Is it the heat refraction?

NO, and I am not in favor of any foreign material coming in contact with my lens for fear of inadvertently changing the zoom or focus. In fact, I mount a holding bracket under my lens so nothing can touch it ! My only contact is with a properly used tripod collar. I use the pod part of my bodypod for use in a car and use a tilt head with panning at the top - in effect a "carpod". This bodypod/carpod ergonomically adjusts from the TOP. PM me for any questions you may have.

Yes, heat refraction in colder weather and vibrations ....even with the engine off in colder weather, heat from the interior exiting the window can cause "heat shimmer" also.

Can some of you post a few shots of what you are using and how you use it. I have never seen or heard of what is being described.
Interested

If it helps, I took the picture posted above from my driver's seat. The bean bag is hanging over the door with the window all the way open. The link in that post will show you what it looks like.

I do most of my bird shots from my vehicle. I made my own bean bag to hang out my van window. Today I ordered a Sabi Sack Bean Bag (B&H) to replace my DIY.

I tried to buy one from a couple local camera stores but to no avail. There isn't much interest in them, up here.

Do you use/own one?

I sure do, I bought one from B&H and do not like it. A much better bag and at half the cost is available from VERTEX PHOTO.COM. The one I don't like is too stiff no matter how and with what I use for fill due to it's design. On our trips to Yellowstone and other trips there are usually three shooters so I kept the bag from B&H but I won't use it.

B&H sells a variety of bean bags. Which one did you buy, that you didn't like?
