Good shots - you can tell by the way their feathers are fluffed up that it's cold outside.

Great shots, all. Don't see many Northern Shrikes posted anywhere, love it. Just for contrast, it was 27 degrees Celsius yesterday in southern Arizona.

Ron, at those temperatures, staying inside where it's warm is the best policy. We get cold up here in Alaska, but we certainly don't have a monopoly on cold weather. I don't go out to take pictures when it's cold like that, either. Well, I've taken lots of "mental" pictures, but haven't figured out a way to download them yet. LOL. For through-the-window shots, those are pretty darned nice. Thanks for sharing your fine feathered friends.

I agree, would will be hunkering down till this cold spell let's up. Supposed to be tomorrow but then the forecast is for some heavy lake effect snow. Can't win nohows. The problem with those "mental" pics as you get older is the hard drive gets a bit shaky. But thanks very much for stopping by and commenting, tis appreciated.

You think they're fluffed up you should see me filling the feeders with long-johns, parka, winter boots, baraclava, mitts, etc. Makes my buddies look fit and trimπŸ˜‹πŸ˜πŸ˜œ
Thanks Sue for stopping by to have a peek at my friends.

This fella/gal is usually a weekly visitor to my feathered buffet line. However as far as l can tell he's only managed to get one small songbird so far, a Junco. As for the temp of +27C (only a diff of 54 degrees) in one of my favorite birding areas it is just a fond memory (or pleasant dream ) right now.

Nice set of some of my favorite feeders. Guess I won't complain about the -20 temps last night. At least it should be warmer in a day. Many a day we had to go out to load wood in the past, but it's been years since we've had more than a day or two that cold. Global warming et al. Stay in and stay warm!

Tis 3 in the afternoon, crystal clear with a brisk easterly wind, temperature minus 27 degrees centigrade (minus 17 degrees fahrenheit) and falling. Forcasted to be about minus 35 centrigrade tonight (about minus 31 fahrenheit). These hardy characters showed up this afternoon to beef up on the black oil sunflower seeds and peanut butter suet. Tonight I hope they will be tucked away somewhere that will provide protection from what will be the coldest night of the year sofar.
And dang it, tonight is the blood moon eclipse with a clear sky. Hopefully the moon will be easily seen from one of my windows so that I can at least get some sort of shot.

PS - Sorry for the poorer quality of the pics. Were shot through a double pane window, twasn't even considering opening one at that temperature. The Junco and Chickadee were well cropped due to distance the birds were from my window. The Shrike is doubly poor as its location was very difficult to see and get a good pic from my kitchen window.
Tis 3 in the afternoon, crystal clear with a brisk... (show quote)

Great shooting and through a window, too. You have cleaner windows than I do!!

Yes BlueMorel they are my dependable winter feeder friends during the long dark days of winter. I usually also don't complain about -20 weather as it is to be expected a bit during the winter months. But I'd be careful in using that terrible incorrect term "global warming". As some say it's all "fake news"😱😱. What a crock of s**t. Don't know if it's global warming or weather change all I know is that it's not what it used to be. I started working outside in the field at age 16 and continued there or more than 40 years til my retirement. It appears to have gotten warmer as the days of extended extreme cold spells have diminished, the storms have increased in numbers and velocity and the periods of drought and heavy rains have also increased. A perfect example of the changes occurring is with the birds. Lately we have been seeing certain birds that in years past we're never seen in this time of the year. Nowadays they are increasingly staying in the north. Just south of Sault Ste. Marie Michigan one now in the middle of January usually can find a flock of Robins, whom survive by going vegetarian and surviving on old apples and berries. 10 years ago this would not have happened. Could it be because it's a bit warmer now??? I guess time will tell what the truth really is.
Love birding in your fabulous state, be it at one of your Wildlife Refuges (Shiawassee or Seney) or that unbelievable spring bird trap at Tawas Point State Park. Already planning our this years trips "down south" I assure you this oldtimer will be staying in and staying warm during this cold streak. Best of luck to you in the upcoming birding season.

Yes Vicki they know how to puff themselves up to keep warm. Temperature is slowly getting better, only went to minus 19 celcius last night ( -2F ) a real heatwave. 😏
Thanks for looking and the kind comment.
