set up home made soft box and trying to get a good looking shot.
best pic i could do
different background? hair blends into background, good facial expression but the background is just too dark!
This is a nice "professional" level image. I have seen lots worse come out of "professional studios". The only thing that I would suggest is to really pay attention to even the smallest details. Here, the shirt collar is a problem that could have been fixed prior to taking this image.
Otherwise, nice image that I am sure will print up well.
the wrinkle came from the headlock i had to put him in to get the tie over his head.haha.Ya i saw that after i was done shooting.was not paying to close attention and all the pics are like that. But thank for the input i wont let that happen again. But it will probly be something else i miss next time.
I didnt have a background area to shoot in.It was in the living room at night.had to get ride of some distracting items in the background.so the easy thing for me was to darken everything.I have photoshop but im a little over my head trying to learn better ways to fix mistakes.Im just trying to get the light right for now.the smaller thing that make a terrific pic hopefully come.

Nice shot and have seen worse that is for sure--had to pay for them--LOL
It is the details that can make or break a photo
The collar needed to be adjusted and I would have chosen a lighter background.--or something of a different colour
easily done if not have backgrounds--hang up a sheet that will not obscure the hair--can be hung over a door--then door shut so that it is tight and not giving the look of wrinkles in the background
Great photo. Your lighting to me is almost perfect. However, the hair does blend into the background as others have pointed out. Perhaps, rather than changing the background, you may consider adding a hair light to separate the hair from the background.
I'm far from a pro, but I am pretty sure that would solve the problem.
I like it. And may I say well done with working with what you you had. Black backgrounds are easiest to work with because of shadow issues. I fully understand the lack of space to work with, that is one of my woes.

Not always. Rules can be broken. I do this quite a bit.
I like it. A little hard light but softer than a bare strobe.
ordered a 50"x50" westcott soft box from adorama.it will be here in a few days so im gonna try again.the larger the box the softer the light i hear.also have to keep it close to wrap around,i also hear.so try try again.practice makes perfect. My homemade box works ok but i want to take better portraits.i will post a new one asap to see if there is any improvement.thanks to all.

Good choice!
I use the orb and the westcott strip box.
I gotta say well done. on the minus side I find that white "strip" in the lower left corner to be distracting. I like the catch lights in his eyes and he has a great retro look and would look good in the 40's/50's style attaire. Collar is a problem. I think a shot on-location would be great. the old jeans + white shirt+ jacket pic street pic would be a starting point for me. He is rugged looking and I would take advantage of that . . . . IMHO. Nice shot.

I do agree Pinstripe maybe. He does have the look!
