I commented on somebody's recent post on Arsenal, and guess what showed up on my fb today? An ad for arsenal. Anybody else?

If it's related to the post, how did they identify me?

There are a couple of ways that this can happen...the easiest is a"cookie" or other software that scans your browsing history and picks up on key words. The other is a sniffer that runs in the background (if you are logged into FB while you are on UHH) and picks up key words. I see ads on this site all the time that can be related to searches that my wife or I have done. Three are myriad other ways also...

Probably Google, just like all the ads here.

I get a lot of Arsenal ads on my FB feed, and lots of other photo related stuff as well, but they're not necessarily timed to when I comment here. That said, when I opened my FB a little while ago, guess what the top ad was?

Happens all the time. And it is the cookies. Its a good thing that they are not really cookies that get delivered to us - everyone would be 300 to 500 pounds heavier. There are sometimes that I look at site just for information and suddenly it shows up as an ad for a while on all the other sites I look at. Even Adorama has their own cookies. All of a sudden I will get an e-mail saying they are ready to sell me the item that I had my eye on. Except it is a Canon or Nikon that I was showing someone something as a comparison. I just laugh and hit delete.

If it really becomes bothersome to you, you can go into your phone or computer and remove them. But a lot of them will return as you look at other websites. I believe there is software that will help prevent unwanted cookies too.

Just out of interest Bill, how many ads are on this page when you visit?
Im amazed at how few ads there are on UHH.
When I viewed this page, there was one ad.
Most often when I spend time on UHH pages I find maybe one, but often no ads at all.

Edit: on posting this and scrolling for advertising, none.

I don't know about Bill de, but after I have looked at lenses or accessories on Adorama or Olympus, they will start appearing on the advertising slots here on UHH.

I think it can depend on what browser you use.
I use Firefox. You can set that to not accept tracker cookies. Maybe that helps. I also set it to delete all cookies when shut down so it starts of sort of fresh I guess. I also dont use Google much for searches (DuckDuckGo is my default).
I'm not on Facebook.
