Whew! I thought the shot was a fine composition, the various eye-catchers working within triangular and circular composition. However, the color seemed a little off, especially the blue-green mountains and magentas water ripples. But brother, I could not get it right, especially the back range. Wanting to create a good sense of space, a more realistic color set, and some dynamics of light, this is the best I could do.
Is something "going on" with this shot, or are my skills just shot?

Hi Bob, many times in this area the distant mountains take on that blue-green coloring. Maybe due to summer haze. I see what you attempted in your edit but I think you over sharpened a bit in your redo. Hopefully some more folks will give a go at. Thanks for your comment and edit Bob.

Composition is difficult because I find no unifying structural elements (place a sheet of copy paper over the image/screen and, with a pencil, trace major lines/shapes; you'll find them incidental and irrelevant) thus, color and contrast must do the heavy work. Overall color was a bit garish so, desaturated quite a bit, and tuned with Lightroom HSL sliders. Then, with the LR brush tool, added contrast and tonal variety to the background. The sky- especially that central white cloud- competes with the subject (presuming the canoe is the intended subject) and adds no value so, why not crop it out? A LUT was applied to hold colors together and a vignette around the edges to keep the eyes from wandering away. ...does't need any sharpening...

Thank you for your detailed critique and explanation regarding your edit. I like the redo although not sure about the added vignette. You have created a totally different image then the one I posted, which is fine by the way. The photo was taken during a sunny day at approximately three in the afternoon, while the edit appears to be a dark day just prior to a storm. Your points are all well taken and appreciated.

Remove some of the blues from the hillside. Toned down the green for a more natural appearance. Did some selective sharpening of the boat and subjects and added some noise control to the sky.

Great job Gaylord. The desaturated greens and reduction of the bluish cast works for me.

Not sure what you mean, issue regarding what? ISO was 400. Thanks for your thought Jenn.

My only reservation about this shot is that the subject, I'm guessing the kayak, is quite small. Not sure that can be helped shooting from the perspective that you are. You needed a wide lens to get the mountains and the sky. To me this is a very nice documentation shot that reminds you of a vacation and good times with family and/or friends. As a photograph it lacks impact in my opinion. That, of course, is just my view.

Thank you Erich for expressing your viewpoint regarding the image. I did not intend for the kayak to be the subject for it is too small and overwhelmed by the mountain and wooded area. I hoped the kayak would simply add a bit of interest and color. So, perhaps for some it is merely a snapshot...but a decent one I suspect.
