Mine at the downtown firehouse was!
We observed several calls being responded to during the several hour tour and very good bar-b-q dinner we enjoyed with the firemen. We trailed behind the first trucks out of the firehouse on an exciting ride too. Ours was a tanker and last out since there was no water expected to be used.
We observed the firemen sensing when an alarm would come in just seconds before the alert was sounded - we couldn't hear or see any indication it was going to happen. Everyone should try to visit a firehouse to see the alertness and compassion the firemen showed for their very important job as we did during our time there. Those men and women are to be lauded by all citizens!

As long as it can be done without getting in the way of the first responders I think it would be a good educational opportunity. Local fire stations could offer something like that when they need some publicity. Our fire station generally has a "help wash the truck" day for kids, when they give some demonstrations as well. They have worked it out so that the fire truck to be washed is out of the way so calls can still be answered without a lot of kids in the driveway. The fire station also has a chicken barbeque for the community which is very popular.

How true! I am proud to say that My Son is a fireman at Walton, KY., and a volunteer Fireman at Verona, KY. where He lives. Seems like He is always at the Firehouse, but He loves it.
Respectfully... they are FIREFIGHTERS.

And you should be!
This reminds me of the presidential saying heard many years ago: "Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country".

Thanks tommy2 for the response. I'll pass it on to My Son.
After high school graduation I was offered a bed in a local fire station(foster home, county support ran out). I got paid for responding to the alarm. We were in our gear and on the truck almost before we woke up. I had had no training other than which unit to hop onto. Would never happen today.
