Indoor with flash

Hi I can't get my head around this question,, I use D90, When shooting indoors ISO 800 f5.6 I get shutter 13th,, 99% of time the images will not be sharp as I want...That is just an average setting, , So without getting soft boxes and other lights out I put my flash on camera, SB800 TTL so it reads whatever setting the camera is on. The issue I cant understand is when I do use the flash the shutter speed stays the same therefore at f5.6 @13th I still get unsharp images,, I thought by using the flash this allows you to get sharper images, because of the more light from the flash,, but the shutter speed remains the same, I don't want to use a tripod for indoors, or use any higher ISO than 800.. My head goes blank when I try and think about using the flash.. Am I missing something simple here,, Any help would be most welcomed. Thanks

First of all, what is @ 13th shutter speed. Did you mean 1/30th of a second?

Use manuel and flash.. I 'always' use 250sec Shutter speed and adjust Aperture ie. f/11 if subject close, f/2.8 if far away. iso 400? Read your manuel..

Practice first, this works for me!

The shutter speed in the D90 reads 13,, so I presume thats 13th of a second at f5.6 iso 800....
thanks for the replies,, I think I have sorted the problem of my question out,, Because I was indoors with flash I thought I still had to have the exposure meter in the middle.. but obviously to get a shutter speed (in manual) of 250th then I had to way way underexpose, so the meter showed way beyond the (-), with the SB800 in TTL the shot at 250th indoors came out correctly exposed, even bumping the shutter speed to max 4000th with flash the image was still correctly exposed, So I have to ignore the exposure meter and chose a fast shutter speed,,,thanks again for your help ... Jimmy

Assuming that the indoor lighting is dark and at night I set my camera with an ISO speed between 400 and 800 ..the shutter speed on my d7000 I set at 1/250 or lower.. And the aperture at f5.6 to f8. Ignore the meter reading on the manual setting because the lighting you adjusted the camera to should be how you set it up. Take a shot ..check the lighting and adjust accordingly..I have rear curtain syncing and have that set to a slow sync in order to pull in background lighting a bit better..indoor lighting is very difficult..there are all different variables ..just like outdoor..you need to work with the different situations ..high ceilings..dark ceilings..mirrors.....if possible try to go to a hall or venue ahead of time and practice..it took me years to get the hang of it..it was another pro at a wedding I had gone to that showed me what to do when I just started digital cameras..
