You can only dial down Highlights so far - then you have to mitigate the blown out pixels. Ahhh, well, it's a good looking cat ...........

I almost think you're right, Jerry This cat invariably chooses a bright spot in the sun to pose, challenging me to make her look good. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does'nt.
Our daughter's mostly black (80%+) Tortie likes to get in shadows or dark places so when I show a picture of her "It's that cat shaped black hole in the middle."

I get blown highlights. Once, when I worked on an image, then sent it to PS, when the image reopened in LR, I hit the recover slider again. It worked on that image.
