Sunrise on Lake Superior

Winter is the best time to live on Lake Superior and the Boreal Forest. Sunrise and sunset are over the lake and the ice and cold can make for some nice images. These were taken on the Grand Portage Reservation at Hollow Rock. This is much photographed in the winter especially since you can line the sunrise up with the gap in the rock (provided the ice hasn't closed it). These were taken yesterday, -13 degrees F, no wind. Cold temperatures on Lake Superior creates sea smoke, which makes for nice soft lighting. We have had a very cloudy fall and early winter, so it was nice to see the sun.

I lived up there 40+ years ago when I was in the Air Force (at the late and very UNlamented Kincheloe AFB) and remember a beautiful evening/sunset drive (summer though) across the UP to buy Advent speakers (serious hi fi equipment was NOT available in the eastern UP). Very beautiful country and I couldn’t wait to leave it.

Equipment works fine in those temperatures, but battery life is much shorter. Especially if you are using live view. Also, a little wave action yesterday and got splashed some. It freezes right away, though!
Condensation from your breath on the back of the camera can sometimes be a problem when looking at the histogram, etc. I typically use live view so I don't get too close to the camera and fog it up.
You have to be careful when you come back inside to let the gear warm up gradually so it doesn't get condensation. I usually leave it in my backpack and let it warm several hours.
