I was there for Wed sunset and Sunday sunrise. But with Ding Darling, Corkscrew, Bunche, Myakka, plus more and 9800 frames to sort I will be a while posting. Those two Heron chicks seemed cute to shoot, but I bet like Africa lion kills they will look ghastly when I get to process them. But their Mother loves them !
they look like head bangers from Leeds lol

well then we likely passed one another, as I was also there sunrise sunday, but I tend to shoot all around the island. If we spoke youl know i am British.
Im betting you were shooting with a larger gun :) My 300mm can't do them justice.
What? Venice, Florida? I'll be in Venice the week of February 10. I'll have to check this place out!

I bet I know who you are. I was standing over by the bench area talking to a fellow from St Pete - we both had tripods and Nikons. He just relocated from VA where I live and he used to shoot with some guys I shoot with. Small world. I think you were a dark shirt and shooting on the far side at some Night Herons when the Egrets chased them off. By chance we never did speak though. And 300 is enough with all the action. I was using a 400/2.8 but admit I put the 1.4TC on for part of the time. You have some great shots for sure.

Do NOT miss this. It is basically a small island in a pond which because of gators keeps away all the potential predators. A few chicks now and lots of nest building and mating dances. By Feb 10 there should be chicks of all kinds. At first morning light there are a TON of birds leaving for BIF shots though the light is not high. At sunset they just keep coming and coming in groups of 10-15 and you marvel at how many can fit on the island.
Go at sunrise as the light is behind you on the front/shorter side. Watch for a cruising gator. Sunset is neat for the silhouettes too but not as good.
Be aware your phone app may mislead you to a bad entrance as mine first did. The real entrance is marked by Brown park signs and is the North end of Annex Road. The south end of Annex road is cut off.
There are opportunities all around the island but the back side is about twice as far over the water to the island as the front side.

Oh great! Thanks for the GPS tips. I don't have much for focal length -- EF100mm f/2.8L MACRO IS USM, and EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6. This will be a learning experience!

and if you walk slowly, wait and watch, a few are bound to land within 10 ft of you or closer.
I have captured an image of a tri coloured that walked by me at 5 ft, turned and hissed, just to let me know he was aware, and I got a nice pic to boot :) The Night Herons and the Green Herons are the most wary,
but even they often are close enough for even a 100mm if yer lucky :)
I have been known to moan about the fact that I can't travel to any other location,,,but then, i see what I brought home, and I realize just haw lucky I am to live 20 minutes away :)
and I want you ALL to know how grateful and appreciative I am for your comments.
I really do love what I do. Next to my dog, it is my life and breath.
And being able to share them and have them appreciated is a real blessing.
Thank you all :)
