Your original post mentions lenses ( plural ) given that your taking multiple lenses in your camera bag given that and the significant difference in performance of autofocus I cant imagine any decision other than taking the D7500. Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the D7500 is environmentally sealed so you have much less chance of an inoperative camera should you be caught outside in rain shower. For me my choice would be D7500 even if it is a bit bigger and heavier than d3200

Thanks all, for the comments and suggestions. Despite some positive comments for the D3200, the consensus is that the newer, upgraded and more familiar D7500 should get to go on the trip. Actually, since the weight I am most concerned about is the walking-around weight, not the suitcase weight, the idea of taking both bodies is tempting. I'll decide as the trip gets closer, probably when I packing!

Great introduction to the group. Thanks again.

Greetings. First post on UHH.

I do all of my photography these days with a D7500. However, for an upcoming overseas trip, i’m wondering if an old D3200 body would be satisfactory for IQ while saving weight? This is a standard site-seeing trip, primarily cities. I’d be using the same lens(es) either way, and I could deal with the menus on the D3200. Won’t really need the higher FPS, and i’ll be shooting RAW. Am I overlooking anything? Are there any other inherent issues about the D3200 that would make this a poor choice?

Travel lenses - now there’s another HUGE topic for another day...

Many thanks. Looking forward to the group’s collective wisdom.

Both cameras will give you good results. Think security. Which camera would you take if it had a reasonable chance of being stolen? Just take plenty of mem cards with you and put the full ones with your passport.

The camera you are most familiar with. They always make the best travel companions.

Are you saying you get more BANG FOR THE BUCK with Cannon and not as much with Canon.

Ha. I don't think that is what I said at all but if you took it that way then you are welcome to your interpretation.

Have a great day,

Dennis

Greetings. I am writing this in Japan to let my fellow hoggers know how things came out. Bottom line - I took the smaller body, and love it.

The situation had changed since my original post, however. My D7500 suffered a fall in April that Nikon declined to repair because the repair cost would be close to the price to replace. Since I shoot birds primarily, I took advantage of the bad situation to upgrade to a D500 for its 10 FPS. It is a wonderful camera, but even bulkier than the D7500. I also picked up a used D3400 on eBay, which can handle lenses that the D3200 could not.

For my travel kit, therefore, I am using the D3400 with the Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E, with the lightweight 55-200 II for longer reach when needed. This combo is easy to carry and gives fast wide angle and very useable mid zoom options, all with 24mp resolution. As I mentioned, I love this combo, and suggest others consider something similar for traveling.

Happy Trails!
