Getting info here is a great idea, but an even better one is to checkout a local photo club if one’s available. Another option is to talking with friends, family or acquaintances to see what they use, what their thoughts are or even if they’d loan you their camera for a day and go over the pictures with you.
Aside from our iPhones, our family’s been a Nikon family for over 50 years. But there are many great choices out there. Unfortunately there’s a saying about cameras: “the next one will be my last one.” Something you always say soon after you buy one.

Thank you Keni. This has been very helpful. We don't know what we're doing but are having a good time trying to figure it out. What do you think of a Nikon d3500 vs the Canon Rebel T6i?

Choosing a brand is not to be taken lightly. Once you have your first camera you become somewhat married to the brand. With the lenses, batteries, battery charger and flashes not being useable on cameras of other brands, it can become costly to switch. Once you learn one camera, switching to a different brand puts you back up the learning curve.
You should get your hands on each and see which feels better in your hand, which has buttons more readily accessible. Which has menus that are better organized? These are decisions no one can make for you.
If there is a store you can get to that sells cameras, go and get the feel of them. If not, you might consider renting.

If you live in Sussex or Kent County DE, you may want to take a look at the Coastal Camera Club - they have a group of mentors, they schedule outings, have digital and print image competitions, etc - and you can learn what you need.

Thank you Mr. Rubin. I really hadn't thought about becoming committed to a particular brand of camera by way of necessary accessories. I think we are going to go with Nikon because we prefer the way it feels in our hands compared to the lower end Canon camera we have held.

We think we would like to photograph animals both domestic and wildlife. Also some landscape and nature photos. Everyday life kinds of things.

Thank you very much for your thoughts and advice. We have bided on some Nikon Coolpix b500 cameras on eBay but have not bought one yet. I'm a little nervous about buying one on the internet. We feel certain we will become Nikon people because of the way they feel in our hands and because of future possibilities... Ths again.
