I'm sure this is quite normal, it's just that I've never seen a bee in this position before.

I do believe that's a wasp, not a bee.
Whatever it is, it sure looks broken to me. Did it appear to be alive?

Not even close. One makes honey in hives. The other live in small colonies. One can only sting once and dies afterward the other can sting multiple times and is a lot nastier.
I'm pretty sure it's a yellow jacket and yes, they fold up like that.
Yes it is alive, there were lots of them flying from flower to flower so I thought they were just small bees. Now I also learned that bees are not the only pollinators of flowers. I never really thought about this. Live and learn.
Other animals that pollinate (especially trees in the tropics) are bats.
