Hello

I was thinking about adding to my set of lens and wanted a recommendation. I have a Canon T5i and currently own a Canon EFS 55-250; Canon 70-300; Canon EFS 18-55; and a Yongnuo 50mm 1:1.8 .45m/1.5 ft.

I like to shoot candid shots of people on the street going about their daily routines. Since I don't like to disrupt them in any way, I was wondering if you all had a lens recommendation that I don't currently own. Thanks.

Your 18-55mm or 50mm will work great as a street photography lens. I use my Nikon 50mm f1.8G for kids soccer games from the sidelines. And, it can be equally as good for street photography. I have the Nikon kit lens, 18-55mm too. Just be careful where you shoot. Thieves may try to take your equipment. Be alert.

Your Canon EFS 18-55 will be great. Give it a trial run.

Canon and Nikon crop sensor cameras both have kit lenses. Mainly the 18-55mm. And each have 50mm too. I own a Nikon crop sensor DSLR. And I own both lenses. F Mounts.

Try this one:"Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Zoom Excellent! From Japan ♯0503" for $127.00 with shipping paid ($109 + $18 =$127) Look up on the net using the same phrase in quotations. The high quality of the lens is a collectable. I noticed that out of three I had found this one is left probably because of the price compared to the two others which were around $100. There are a lot of lenses that comes near to fit the description of this lens but they are not the same lens - just make sure that the lens is made in Japan, has "II" and has "MACRO" printed inside the little "distance box" on the lens...a flower is the WRONG one. To save a lot of time just look up the lens with-in the quotation I have given you.

Canon makes a couple of 'pancake' (Very thin) lenses that would potentially make your T5i camera even less conspicuous for street photography. The EF-S 24mm 2.8 'pancake', and the EF 40mm 2.8 'pancake'. The 24mm sells for around $100.00. It is a very light lens, and produces excellent pictures. The 40mm is a bit more, in the $175.00 range because it is an EF lens.

Also, use the articulating display on the T5i to allow you to shoot from waist level, helping to insure your candid shots are truly candid.

Something in the 14 to 16 range, possibly
a manual-everything lens such as Mitakon
or the other names that are really all alike.

You prefocus manually and work at f/8 or
f/11, nearly instant shutter response with
zero AF delay. Requires mode "A" or "M".
This THE classic street grab method.

You might enjoy using a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM.

Or upgrade to the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM (replace the Yongnuo lens).

If you were working closer to your subject, I'd recommend the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM, which is a pretty compact lens.

For unobtrusive street photography, the Canon "pancake" lenses someone suggested might be interesting too. The only problem is that both of them are f/2.8 lenses... a larger aperture might be nice: EF-S 24mm f/2.8 and EF 40mm f/2.8. Another consideration... both of them are STM lenses, which are quiet but not as fast focusing as the USM lenses. Also, neither of the pancake lenses have much in the way of focusing rings.... so they aren't very easily manually focused. Neither has a focus scale, either... so there's no "pre-focusing" them the way some street shooters like to do.

I use the Canon 15-85 for my walk around & street use. It is wide and also has enough depth to stay off to the side.

Usually, you find a need for a lens and then buy one. Deciding to buy a lens and then deciding on the focal length is a different approach.

Hard to beat the reach/size ratio on this one, and performs respectably across the spectrum (at a full 400 you lose a little something, but back it off just a little and you're sharp).
$600 on Amazon with warranty, a camera bag, and some cheap filters and a cleaning kit - other offers throw in cheap tripods... anyway, just got it and very happy with it.

I think I'd advise either the 40mm or 24mm primes short and unobtrusive on the camera, they don't attract as much attention.

Go out and shoot with what you have and when you can not get the shot you want with your lenses make a note of what lens you would like to have and after awhile you will know what new lens you need (if any). - Dave
