I have a Canon 7D Mark II and while shooting my cheek rubs the screen. I can’t seem to find a viewfinder, extender etc. that will fit ....to get it a little away from my cheek. It’s quite annoying.....does anyone know of a viewfinder I could try? I’ve ordered a couple on line but they didn’t fit. Help please.

That device will result in creepy-slow AF,
huge battery drain, and a plague of hot
pixels. Just don't get annoyed that your
cheek touches the screen. Man up ;-)

The extender I used with my Canon cameras was quite short but did the trick. Very inexpensive. I just found it to be discontinued at B&H.

What's wrong with the camera touching your cheek? Holding the camera snugly against your face helps make for steadier shots.

If it really bugs you, the Canon EF-EX15 II is probably your best bet. Just be aware that it makes the viewfinder visually smaller and in some cases crops or makes it more difficult to see the data display at the bottom and side of the viewfinder. I don't know the difference between the original EF-EX15 and the "II". The latter is promoted for use on Rebel series cameras, though... many of which have a sensor adjacent to the eyeport to detect when the photographer is using the viewfinder, to automatically turn off the LCD display. Apparently on those cameras the original one blocked that sensor and caused the camera to keep the LCD screen off all the time. Maybe the II version was revised to correct that problem.

Apparently that Canon viewfinder extender is discontinued... but you can still find them new and easily find one used. A lot of people bought them, tried them, didn't like the results and end up selling them.

There are both versions of the Canon EF-EX available on Amazon new... available new and used on eBay... and used various other places online. Prices are all over the map.

There are also third party clones of them available... I see them listed under JJC, Cowboy Studio and Epoque brands. I have no idea if these are any good or not. I'd be a bit concerned about the quality of the optics in an $11 item!

I found this at Roberts camera for $19.00. Roberts is a good company. https://robertscamera.com/ep-ex15-eyepiece-extender

Bracing the camera against your face is a good thing, but noses and cheeks leave sweat, oil, etc. on the LCD panel.

The Canon extenders DO make the image in the viewfinder smaller, but they DON'T vignette the image. Making the image BIGGER in the viewfinder would do that. That's exactly what happens if you remove the two plastic lens elements inside the extender. I have done it.

If you want to use the extender to get your face away from the LCD but keep a larger image in the viewfinder, remove the lenses (two screws). If you don't like the resulting vignetting at the corners, put the lenses back in. Try it and see which you prefer.

I’m curious if you shoot using your right or left eye. I shoot through my left eye and have similar issues and I think cameras are designed for shooting using your right eye.

That being said, I think I can hold my camera steadier using my left eye and bracing the camera against my cheek. Just have to clean the LCD screen a little more often. Anybody else have similar thoughts.

As this person wrote- it works for me- the rubber cup sort of seals your eye with out getting really close- Worth the try!! You can always return it!

It amazes me how so many people use the right eye to the viewfinder. If you look at basic camera design, the viewfinder favours the left side of camera. I was taught that when you use the left eye to view, the camera rests against the forehead and nose, for stability, If you use the right eye to view ,the camera , could turn around to the right, as only part of the camera, rests against the forehead .

After reading this I had to grab my camera and try it. Doesn't work for me, using my right eye the top of the viewfinder is braced against my forehead and the upper left side of the camera is braced against my nose. Using my left eye I still had the top of the viewfinder against my forehead but the tip of my nose was mashed against the screen and wasn't as solid of a fit. I also use Back Button Focus so that could affect how the camera fits with left eye viewing as well... I did notice my thumb was touching my face where it normally doesn't at all and I use it to change focus point on the fly as well. Just my quick experiment, I expect I'd get used to it if I had too.
