Rumor is they wrote it to tease Graham Parsons. Others believe Townes Van Zant wrote it. Jager and Richards are credited with it, it sounds a lot like Parsons and Parsons had a major influence on the Stones country stuff. I like the NRPS version.

Who knows, around that time Ry Cooder was being looked at as a new Stones band member. The talk is, what is known today as "Keith tuning", (open G, no E string), was lifted holus bolus from Cooder.

But Gram is pretty much the originator of "country rock" and was spending a lot of time doing junk with Keith. Also it is said to be about an incident that really happened between Gram and his wife. Lots of stories hard to know. Lots of stories about Gram period. He should be in the "Rock n Roll hall of fame, but the movement, while still alive, doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
