My son, who’s a wildlife biologist, told me they were imported from Europe as pure graylags and have interbred with other species already here, including honkers and various domestic geese. Some of them are huge and have a wingspan that looks to be 5 or 6 feet. So a real heinz 57 bird. Goofy looking things. They are much more wary of us than the local mallards. So graylag is used colloquially here, not scientifically. They’re are fun to watch coming into the pond because compared to the ducks they look like Boing 747’s.
