What type of remote or transmitter would i use for a family portrait with a Canon T3.

I use both wired and wireless remotes, depending on the situation. Whichever you use, see if you can set the camera for a slight delay after pushing the button. Otherwise, you will get a pictue of yourself pointing the remote at the camera. :D

Then you need a radio remote Jerry.
Just leave your hand in your pocket or behind your back; no need to point it at anything
(besides, even cameras know it's not polite to point ... )

I don't think wireless works on the T3, only the T3i

You may be confusing ETTL flash control, which is built-in light-pulse or infra-red pulse remote control for your strobe with remote shutter release.

We are discussing third party radio remotes for the shutter release, which will work with most DSLRs, including the T3.

(PLEASE NOTE: 50D, T3 AND XS DO NOT HAVE WIRELESS REMOTE CAPABILITY)

You are looking at a an IR (Infra Red) OEM remote. It works the same way a TV remote works - basically line of sight.

But I was suggesting a radio signal remote shutter control. They can work over 100 feet away from the camera and at any angle. Different animal.

For example, the following radio remote works with the Canon EOS Rebel T3 (1100D).

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749989-REG/Vello_RW_C1_FreeWave_Wireless_Remote_Shutter.html

There are several others with additional features (more expensive) that will also work - also called radio intervalometers.
But for our purposes here, the above unit for $36 (free shipping) should do a fine job.

Thank you for clearing that up. I actually don't have a T3, but good to know and I think the advanced features are worth another $20

I have just bought a canon RC-6 Remote control for my Canon T3i for £3.70GBP ( Shipping included ).
It has two options - an instant shot and a 2 second delayed shot - tried it out yesterday and it worked great first time.
Thought it my be a joke purchase but for £3.70 it was no big risk. Amazed that it worked and needed no setting up whatsoever.
You have to set your camera on remote in the drive mode menu.
It works by infra red and presume it should work on your camera just as well.

Thanks! Another alternative (and less expensive too!)

Just be aware that IR (Infra red) remotes are often limited by direct line of sight to the sensor on the front of the camera, by distance, and sometimes by bright sunlight.
But this should not be a problem for a self portrait or for the photographer to join a group shot.

Radio remotes are more flexible in that they can be used at greater distances, around corners, in any lighting and be in any direction from the camera.

I ordered your suggestion from BH. The R6 is NOT radio and does not work with T3, correct? Anyway, I see your suggestion will work with my T4i.
