Not so sure about focus but more about shutter speed too slow. For sports an exposure time of 1/500 minimum would be advisable. At 1/320 you're just too slow to actually freeze the motion. For fun, try ISO of 6400 instead of 4000 and use 1/500 (or faster) SS. I think you will notice a big difference. Kudos for going manual.

Agree that something in focus is off, but not sure it is SS, as I am not seeing blurry players or ball vs other more static elements.

For a least the purposes of experimentation, do up SS 1 or 2 stops, and go as high as ISO6400 will allow.

I would also ask that you try a different focus strategy, as least as an experiment. You are using a 100mm lens @ f2.8. If you are 25 ft away, this gives you a DoF of between 24 and 26 feet in terms of ‘zone”. I always worry about this, especially when shooting multiple players. If you are using a D9 or D15 group focus, it may be setting you to a “nice average” where everything is not quite good. Note that at 12 feet, you only a a total range of 6 inches, 3 on each side. Not much room for error!

Just for kicks, set for BBF, AC-C, Single, and try to take some 1 player shots with your center point directly on their chest. (Think a nice dribbling cut shot, with the ball at their hand for timing), or a outside shooter up in the air. Not worried about the composition for this test, just seeing if we can what you perceive as a focus issue.

And try this specifically. For a player shooting foul shots, as they get ready to shoot, get them in focus on their face, let you thumb off the BBF button (to freeze it there), recompose the shot and shoot as the ball is leaving their fingertips. Again, just try it to see the impact, not necessarily as a keeper.

With the above, you can also try different SS. You know you need to move up (faster) SS when you a getting a sharp player, but the writing on the ball or the ball itself is a bit blurry. Move up 1 stop at a time until it is frozen. Stay there, or move back 1 stop (sometimes I do this trade off, preferring “slight” blur on the ball with a sharp player for the 1 stop lower ISO.

Good luck. As Jules said, this is hard

Thanks. I have been shooting 1/500@5000 on previous games and yes I need to go back to it. Thanks. I just don't want too much grain as that makes them look fuzzy or out of focus. I'll try 6400 ISO on a couple test shots tonite

What focus group? Single try, then group. You must up the iso and bump up the shutter to at least 1/640. My other post try out too. I see motion blur also. Practice at warm ups, your shooting not close enough. Try the corners and under the basket to the right or the left. Move around the gym, take shots of the coaches who are not moving, and like David said the free throws. BBF is the way to go. No re compose just going to confuse the issue. Good luck

On the focus groups, my comments on S vs D9 vs D15 are “Nikon speak”. Jules is also a Nikon shooter I believe (pretty sure). Hopefully, someone with Canon experience can help “translate”.

Correct I shoot Nikon so when I say focus group D9. I don't know what groups are with a Canon.

Shooting inside is so damn tough!! I was going to say go home and look at all your settings and see what is working. I always do that, but I sat here thinking (that could be the problem right there LOL) you can do that but a lot of the gyms I shoot in it will all depend on where and what angle you are shooting at. The lights and shadow are different all over. Just like football at night the lights throw different light patterns everywhere. Sorry just rattling on. Listen to the help especially Jules he shoots a lot and he shoots for MaxPreps which makes you a better shooter. Good luck I know the problems just keep shooting and learning as we all have to.

Especially when one is a natural lite outside shooter!! I do go back through my files to which are better and with what lens. Plus I don't have a newspaper tag around my neck to get into the best places. That is not an excuse tho! ha! I think the gyms so far have had good lighting. They are fairly new. Last nite was a Challenge Nite. We won all. Wrestling- Girls BB and Boys BB. Posting last nites sometime today
