Years ago we had a pair of Macaws. The Blue and Gold one was able to fly and would land on my shoulder as they were both very tame. But one day it flew out an open window. In response to posted "missing bird" notices we heard from people who had seen him near a couple of homes not far from us. We had a large elaborate, iron cage we kept the birds in at night, and during the day they would often perch on the cage where they could easily climb down to the cage door to get to their food dish, when they were not busy eating furniture. So my wife took the cage and set it in the back yard of one of the homes where our Macaw had been seen. She left the door open with food inside, with the hope he would recognize it as home and go in to feed, or perch on top of it as he had been accustomed to at our house. The next morning she went to see if the Macaw had been attracted to his old home but found someone had stolen the cage. There were continued reports of sightings so whoever took the cage apparently did not get the Macaw with it, but we never saw the bird again, nor the cage. There is a lesson in this.
