No yo yos on this thread - just helpful advice from some very knowledgeable professionals whom I admire and whose advice I greatly appreciate.

Lesn rentals has several for rent. They even have one that is motorized and can be programmed to move in precise increments for stacking. Just what you need for your 'smelly' photo assignment. I'd love to see the results if you are clear to share them.

I will certainly do so Gene - I have my light tent and Camranger tether set up, and I’m trying multiple techniques and suggestions that you and others have been kind enough to share - an interesting learning experience - Thanks for the help.

OK. Back to the tilt lens idea ....

Proof of concept. 35mm TS on FF body.

I rigged up an approximation of your 1x18 inch
subject item. There's a sample shot at f/2.8, one
at f/5.6 or 8.0 [not sure], and some shots of the
lens adjustments [max fall and max swing], and
a shot showing the relative positions of camera
and subject.

I know everyone is hot for focus stacking, cuz it
features a lotta magical procedure, resulting in a
feeling of accomplishment, even wizardry ! OTOH
a TS lens is a WYSIWYG one-shot method that is
downright boring to execute. Crude, but effective.
Boring, but predictable. I like the instant finished
on-site result, no further editing required. Clients
can see and approve results immediately. YMMV.
