Nice shot. Both of my parents and all of my ancestors going back two hundred years come from the adjacent parishes.

Great old bridge - what is the fort on the other side?

The fort was a British fort built during the Napleonic Era as part of a string of defenses to protect the major waterways and coast from a possible invasion by the French. The area around Shannonbridge has been an important crossing point on the Shannon River since the Iron Age. It is at the end of a long elevated ridge or Esker of glacial fill from the Ice Age that served as a 'highway' through the central bogs of ancient Ireland.

The fort is now a Cafe. A distant cousin of mine owns a pub on the near side of the bridge. Its a small world!
