The Light This Morning

I was driving to work this morning and it was one of those days where the light was just incredible. There was hardly any haze and the sun was was filtered through the clouds into this crystal clear soft light. I stopped at a red light and took this with my cellphone through my front windshield while eating a toasted everything bagel with chive cream cheese and fighting off my dog trying to eat my bagel as well. Your comments (on the photo not my driving habits) are always very much appreciated.

I don't see the quality of the light you describe, but I do like the composition. The tree is a great counterpoint to the rigid order of the buildings.

Well that's disappointing. Normally there is such a haze over downtown I could never get as clear a shot as this. I appreciate your honesty. Back to the drawing board.

I'm spoiled by no humidity and far less population. In summer, we can get horrible smoke from fires all over the northwest - including British Columbia - and there are certain times of year, such as hops harvest or winter inversions, when the air gets polluted. Otherwise, it's fairly pristine.

Also, I wonder how much you are being influenced by what you saw live vs. what you believe you're seeing in the photo. Shooting through a windshield can cause all kinds of issues with quality.

Aside from the windshield and your normal hazy, polluted views, there are just "those times" when we'll never be able to capture the light (and on a cell phone too).

As someone who has to use a cell phone when dog walking, I appreciate the great capture you made, Keni!

Thank you Mike. They present their own challenges.

One of my earliest concepts regarding photography, dating to the 1960s, is "always be ready, you never know when a photo op shows up." IOW, have a camera with you as much as possible. That sure is easier these days with cell phone cameras. Good work!

Photography is something very subjective. For a person like you, used to see haze over the city this scene is indeed a blessing to photograph. For me, used to so many sunny days in Florida it is only a scene made on a cloudy day.
Please, do not get disappointed in my comments. I can perfectly understand your feelings when you say beautiful light. We are so used to those hours when the light is so beautiful that many times we do not understand the feelings of others.
It is a great shot, and as Linda said very well balanced.

I think a lot of it does come down to what you are used to seeing. I made sure to come the same way this morning to work and it was completely different. Some of the haze was back and that clear, clean quality was gone. I am also sneezing more. I think if I included it in a series of shots of the skyline it would work well but as a stand alone I understand that it might be hard for others to appreciate.

Thank you. I almost always have my camera with me but when I don't, I don't hesitate to pull out the phone. Sometimes it works great, other times not so much and that's ok. I know there will be other times and other places.

Thank you for your comments and I got over my disappointment after thinking about it and I am not disappointed in your comments. I was disappointed that others couldn't see it but I think I understand why. I captured what I saw and that was important to me.

I've come back to this image several times all day. I generally like the composition and the placement of the tree i think adds some balance to the image. Finally, I think I have figured out what has been bugging me all day. The bottom of the image, as least to me, feels like something is chopped off. I don't know what is below the existing frame. Maybe a street? A wall? I don't know, but something feels missing to me.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You are correct. I did crop it. Here us the original.

Thanks Karin. It's a great tree. I may have to do something with just the tree.
