There's lots of potential here, but allow me to make some suggestions: when you're shooting something like this, ask yourself what you find interesting about the scene; walk around your subject, shooting as you go--all you're wasting is a little time and some ones and zeroes; ask yourself what elements make the scene interesting and what elements are extraneous. The bit of fence on the left, for example, adds nothing. Had you been right against it, shooting back at the barn, you might have had a better shot.

Try shooting from different angles and from different distances. Finally--I know, it's about time that I shut up--consider shooting details. I'd love to see a tighter view of that little window.

Your focus and exposure are dead on, nice job with those important elements. Now you just want to give some more thought to what caught your eye in the first place.

Thanks Mike. The color is what drew me to the barn.

Thanks Karin. Whenever I see a red barn I just have to shoot it.

With over 20,000 posts on this forum, I suspect you know a thing or two about exposure, composition, blah, blah, blah. That being said, I have a feeling that the area around the barn was limited and only allowed you to get the shot you did. Otherwise, I'm sure you would have explored all sides, angles, and distances. Judging from the shadows, the time of day and lighting was about perfect for texture and detail. If I'm close to being right, then we've all been in your shoes. Good photo, exposure, and subject. Ken

Very striking image - the red barn against the blue sky just grabs you.

It's a really nice shot and the colours are very nice and clean. I looked at subtracting that fence to the left. But when I did, it took out too much of the tree. So the fence (IMHO) stays.

On this particular day in question I purposely brought with me only one lens, which was a 50mm prime, thus forcing myself to limit the pictures I could take. For example, although that window may have made a good photo, it was beyond my means to get up there. Yes, not only did I explore around the barn, other photos were taken from different angles. Sometimes, for whatever reason, folks presume that the photo one posts is the single photo shot in the area.
Thanks Ken for understanding that unless one is standing there and knows of the conditions, equipment, etc. it is a bit presumptuous to speak of other potential photos rather than simply critique the image posted. Hopefully this all makes sense.

Thanks AzPicLady. I, too, considered either cropping or cloning out that wee bit of fence. My decision to keep it was based on having a diagonal line leading into the picture from that corner and adding a little more interest to the overall picture. Some disagree, and I am still on the fence (heh) regarding it.
