Quite odd that you should reference Zen. I have had several encounters with Buddhism. Buda was teaching the suppression of samsara. Samsara is the root of all suffering in the world, yet it is not the cause, the cause is the internal dialogue of people. Internal dialogue sets one up to think there is no humor and that we must keep reality real.

While the whole time Lord Krishna is amused and his eyes dance with mirth, it is Radha who giggles aloud! One should listen and watch Tibetan Monks, they are always laughing. If you are looking for a Tibetan Monk, go to a Target Store, Tibetans are crazy nuts for Target, if they are around they will be in Target!

Harry, it was actually quite easy, don't be shocked now, they like to slake! So after the shoot I made lunch while they 'used' the apartment in the garden! You must realize how 'wound up' they became during the shoot. Truth is girls are easy, more so than boys, you just have to learn how to push their buttons. LOL!!!

Slaking is an old expression for a prolonged sensual kiss. In the TV series MASH, the character Radar speaks in shock about a woman kissing him, he tells the guys he was slaked!

A truly enjoyable series. I've been away from the board for a while and enjoyed catching up. I for one like to shoot photos of models interacting and having fun. Even if 90% are unsuable, you'll usually get a few gems. On of the amazing things about this collection of shots is how many are really, really good from an expression standpoint.

There are a lot of good shots but I really enjoyed the "cheating" monkey photos, where the models were peaking through their fingers or not quite covering their mouth. All of that said, for my personal edification and curiousity I would have enjoyed looking at your best 5 images from the set with some text that detailed your setup. The motive theme of the shoot was evident from the initial poses and the title.

In answer to the question about details regarding the series entitled Monkey Business in all the posted installments I used the same set up for this shoot as I do for many of the studio sessions. In this case I was still using the Canon digital body with and the Canon zoom lens set to medium range, I had found that image quality was best with this setting. Focus was set with the auto focus function for a place some 18 inches to the center front of the subject. The shutter speed at about 1/100 (good flash sync speed for the Canon), the ISO at about 200 and delivering images at about f 11.

The flash power base was a 1000 watt second, the two channels set to symmetrical out put, where channel A had one head and channel B had two heads plugged in. Channel A head was high over head (13 feet) and back behind the women, with a 30 degree honeycomb light modifier in the standard 60 degree bowl. This light created mild separation from the background and mild hair light to the three.

Chanel B with two heads, were mounted with out any reflectors in the rear of two Larson 42 inch soft boxes. The Larson to the left had a circular opaque cover centered on the front of the box to create a circular light, while the right box was without any front alteration. Now for the confusing part in the logo of lighting, the two soft boxes were adjusted by distance to place the energy vortex created by the Larson box so that there is greater contrast to the left side of the scene while the right side has mainly soft diffused fill type light expected for the standard notions of a soft box. This is why I favor the Larson soft box.

The digital camera is white balanced to a white target of about 16X20 inches placed at the subject plane. The camera lens at infinity and the body held so there are no shadows or such cast on the card. This type of color balance includes all light sources and the environment (like the backdrop), all of which must be balanced with common sense.

Because we are on a forum where nubies like information I will point this out, NEVER do a white balance using a Kodak or similar gray card, NEVER! A Kodak gray card is a neutral density attenuator. Also, the Polarizer and the units you place in front of your camera lens are neutral density attenuator, they are NOT filters. Filters are designed to pass light in a certain band width and absorb other band widths of light. A neutral density attenuator is designed to reflect or pass equally the spectrum. The Kodak gray card is a neutral density attenuator so it is designed to one thing only, to have a reflectance of .80 density plus or minus .01 density. It is/was made by putting near neutral colored ink on a piece of paper until a density of .80 +- .01 If you look carefully at a stack of Kodak gray cards they will exhibit a neutral look to a slight yellow, green even blue cast. If you must color balance with the card the back of the card is considered a close approximation to neutral and reflectance of 90%. If you want to know what that .80 density is open Photoshop, go to the CURVES and open that and you will see that the center of the grid is indeed .80 density.

Back to the lighting set up. I often use this slightly out of balance set up to do studio work. The two lights can be moved from their right/left position. With the monkey theme I wanted to depart from a traditional lighting, so the dominant light is the fill and is to the RIGHT. In a more traditional set up I will have the stronger light on the left side. This is because in Western society we are trained to read from left to right, and top to bottom. When one departs from standard format one 'monkeys' with the viewer's comfort zone.

Last, and some other post I will go over this critical issue, that is the women have shoes on. This falls to the simple statement "That when your shoes are on you are dressed."

Most people understand that Buddhism and zen are serious intellectual and spiritual pursuits, but most do not understand that the end result is that you get to laugh a lot! We must have a deficit of Tibetan Monks in the Detroit area, either that or I just haven't been paying attention (a violation of zen rule #3). The next time I'm at Target I'll be looking more closely at the other patrons!
