Upgrading my Sony a65

I would like to upgrade from my Sony a65 to the Sony a77II. My Sony a65 isn't the greatest in low light and was hoping that the a77II would be a good improvement. Does anyone out there have experience with the a77II?

My first thought is if you have an a6500, your current lenses won't work on the a77ii. Why not look at he a7's FF if low light is your prime motive.

Here is a low light shot with an a7ii. Hand held.

The Sony A65 is not the same as the A6500. I believe the older Sony A mount lenses will work on the newer A77 series with an adapter.

The A77ii will perform better in low light than your A65, but only marginally. To gain noticeable improvement you should consider moving to the full frame A99ii. Also, any Minolta AF lens would be a great match for it and they can be had for a song compared to Sony native lenses.

All Sony and Minolta A mount lenses will mount on the A77ii without needing any adapters as they are native A mount cameras. The E mount bodies require an adapter to use the A mount lenses.

I am not sure that an upgrade within the Sony A-mount family of cameras still is a good investment. I don't think that Sony will put more energy into their A-mount cameras and lenses now that their E-mount equipment really has taken off.

If low-light performance is the issue, you should look at full-frame cameras. If you upgrade to full-frame you might as well make the switch to the E-mount rather than upgrading to the a99.

I have been shooting with the Sony A7 III for nine months now, and its low-light capability is amazing. I can shoot at 6400 ISO without worrying about noise, and the image stabilization system allows me to shoot hand-held at 1/30 of a second.

What is your budget? A used a99 is a nice improvement noise-wise. I had the a65, upgraded to the a77ii and then had an a99 to compare it against. Noticeable improvement and now I am a FF convert. I have only the a99ii now, but a used a99 is a good deal, $760 on Adorama. Will need to sell you cropped lenses and buy some used FF ones if you need some.

Sorry, you are right I was thinking the a6500. I hate Sony model numbering, too many repeats of similar digits and why they used an a on the a7's if they are e-mounts. Why not call it e7. Guess the A means camera to Sony.

The A77II is a fine camera. I really liked mine. AND, you can mount older AF Minolta lenses without an adapter and they work really great.
I also got the battery grip. Many Mint ones on Ebay at very good prices including the box.

I also had the A65 and gave it to my son. He loves it but I purchased the A77ii. It is by most opinions one of Sony's best cameras with [ at it's inception ] some of the best desired features. Have used mine primarily in the studio and because i'm not as steady as i once was the image stabilization is the clear winner for me. I recommend it highly

Since the A65 is newer than the A77II, I would not expect much (if any) improvement in noise.....I would look more to a used A99. - I have used an A77II for 3 years now.

I don't know if this helps, but here is a sample from my a77ii. The photo is unedited other than the conversion to jpeg. Sony a77ii, Minolta 70-200 f4, handheld, 1/200 @ f5.6 ISO 5000

I made the move you are contemplating. The A77ii is a major improvement from the A65v. Faster operating and ease of use make it grand. Low Light shots are noisier than I like, bit I can capture shots that would otherwise be elusive. The "kit" 16-50 2.8 is a good lens, albeit heavy. Sigma makes a 17-70 2.8/3.5 (Ithink) that is much lighter and very quick on the camera. A multitude of battery grips are available as well. Have fun, plenty of glass available as you know, at good prices.

Again, unedited. Sony a77ii, Minolta 70-200 f4, 1/200 @ f4, ISO 5000. You can see the noise level here better than in the first.
