Hello

I'm recently retired from the National Park Service and have rediscovered my old film SLR cameras. I kind of forgot how much I used to enjoy this. Oh sure, I've taken loads of family photos with my phone or little digital point and shoot, but had put away my SLR cameras years ago.
With plenty of time on my hands now maybe its time to get back to it.
Heck, I may even break down and pick up a decent DSLR if I can afford it. I'd welcome suggestions on a good fun DSLR (new or used) on a retirees income? The cost of film development will get to me sooner or later I guess.
Anyway, Here are a few of my favorite photos that I took some time ago at Theodore Roosevelt NP. Feel free to comment and I'd welcome critiques. They may even be scans from prints if I remember correctly.
My other hobby is wooden boat building and restoration .
Thanks

BillO
Hello br br I'm recently retired from the Nationa... (show quote)

Welcome to the forum. Regardless of all those who want to jump in and tell you to go out and spend $$$ on digital equipment, do what you want and love to do. I personally shoot both digital and film (both 35mm and 120) and there are several of us on this forum who do as well. Above all enjoy yourself.

Welcome to the Hog. I am a film camera collector with all the Canon, Nikon, Minolta cameras in working order, shoot many of them, plus I develop my own color and B&W. Shoot what ever your passion is and enjoy.

Kind of a silly response. How come lots of people are going back to film, or never stopped? To dismiss film entirely is just plain wrong.

As for all your reasons......depends on whether you want to use a camera that does all your thinking for you, or you want to be a knowledgeable photographer rather than just a button-pusher.

no need for insults -- I dont need to be a mechanic to drive my car; I dont need to be a computer expert to use my smart phone - cameras are the same - a tool - you can get excellent results without knowing the details of lighting, etc -- fine if you want to delve into the details, but you can produce outstanding results with a point & shoot or even a smart phone

there are still people who prepare all their food by manual techniques, but KNOWLEDEABLE chefs take advantage of new machines; similarly, I produce more and better images with DSLR than were even possible with film - ever tried HDR with film?

In fairness, the OP did ask for advice on a low cost entry into the DSLR world. He seems knowledgeable in film gear, so it's kind of natural that people proffer their suggestions on DSLRs.

I predominantly shoot digital these days, mostly for the low processing cost and the added capabilities of my DSLR system. But I keep my old 35mm, medium format, and 4x5 gear in good shape and go out and shoot it for the fun of it a few times per year.

Hi and thanks for everyone's kind responses.
I currently have two older film SLRs and various lenses. One is Olympus and the other a Minolta Maxxum 500si. Both still work really well.
I also have a nice little digital Olympus with good zoom (and of course my Iphone 7).
I think I'll play with these for awhile while I look at the digital options a bit more.

I have boxes of old photos, negative, slides, CD's (and even floppy disks) to go through, catalog and organize. It should be fun. The ones I've looked at remind me how much fun I had getting the shots and that some are not even half bad! Might even post the ones I am not to embarrassed to share.
I even found a half a dozen rolls of exposed film that I should develop someplace Maybe a few gems there?

Thanks again
Bill

I understand. I too have recently retired and trying to get back into fotos. I've been taking fotos for several years but slowed down and now I'm try to speed back up! I'm a widower and I'm 70, so "I gotta get er goin"

Hope you have some fun and enjoy yourself in your retirement.

I live in LA (lower Alabama) so if you ever come this way, give me shout.

I have a Mark II 5D, a Mark 1V 1D and just bought a FujiFilm X1H. So there's no excuse for this old man to get back into the art!

Here are a couple older digital shots taken with a little Olympus 610uz.
For what they are, I kinda like them.
If I post anything more, I'll move to another section I guess.
I am still trying to figure out what to put where here.

Nice shots, Bill!

I hope you find some of the DSLR advice helpful when you eventually decide to upgrade. I'm at the point where I think our "glass" collection is relatively complete, so we can concentrate on bringing our bodies closer to the latest tech. I'm at the D7100 stage and looking for another D7100 or 7200 to upgrade my wife's D3200. That's the source of my original recommendation to concentrate on lenses first, but there are other excellent ideas and concepts that have been recommended to you in this thread. You're taking some very nice shots with the Oly, and you've got very decent film gear, so I don't think you need to be in any hurry to buy the Latest And Greatest in gear.

Have fun!

Andy

Well I've gotten quite a few responses and suggestions and agree that I am going to take it slow. I keep saying DSLR (for my potential digital) but have also been looking at the mirror-less systems as well.
My son just purchased a new Sony A6000 that he is trying. I got a quick peek at it over Christmas but that's about it.
I've been trying to look at what lens system(s) would offer the most options and long term "sustainability"as well as "body brand and type options.
I know everyone has their favorites!

Thanks again
