My husband and I just moved to Nevada from gorgeous Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.
Although the wildlife, birding and social aspects were a main priority for us, the weather was NOT.
We are original California's and retired to Homossassa, Florida location back in 2004. Eight years later moved to Arkansas due to the humidity conditions in Florida. Wellll, Arkansas isn't much different, humidity wise.
Now, as of October 2018 we reside in Sparks, Nevada, which has the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets we have ever witnessed. It must be the 4,000 foot altitude or the mountains surrounding the area. Plus no humidity, only dry,dry air. Yea!

We enjoy taking day trips in our new location. Birding, flowering desert, mountains, Lake Tahoe. We are open to travel.
Any suggestions?

Jump on 395 south and enjoy the eastern Sierras. Lots to see all the way to Bishop and beyond. Go a little further into Death Valley for the spring wild flowers. 395 is one of the most beautiful drives in the western parts of the US. Norther eastern Nevada is miles and miles of vacancy. You are going to love it there but things can get a little chilly and windy in the winter. You can become snow birds, heading down to low deserts of S. California (we like Borrego Springs) or southern Arizona for a reprieve from the cold. Have fun.

Pay a visit to Manzanar Detention Center off Hwy 395, for a side story of WW II.

Visit the Alabama Hills, too, near Lone Pine.

You could also drive up to the trailhead (at 8000 feet elevation) where the climb to the top of Mount Whitney begins.

The Lone Pine area seems desolate but it has attractions.

Enjoy.

Looks like you are near Reno which is a gorgeous area! We drive back and forth from Az to Salem Oregon twice a year and really like N Nevada. Often we end up staying at Malheur in S Oregon just across the Nevada/Oregon line. It is the main area for transitory birding in that area (especially in the spring). Beautiful desert area with lots of marshlands. Lots to see and do. And it's a beautiful drive. There is an RV place there with cabins. You can cross into Oregon N of Winamucca.

You are near so many great places to see. Google Sparks, Nevada and bring up the larger map. Decide how far you are comfortable driving, draw a circle with that distance figured in, and enjoy. If you decide to take day trips, or even a few days, check out roadtrippers.com. it is a site that will highlight sites to see along the way.

I moved to PA from Sparks a few years ago.
Things to do:
Carson City see the Capitol, the Governor's house Mark Twain's house, the US Mint and a dozen other things there.
Take Highway 50 east from Carson City, many beautiful mountains and valleys will be crossed all the way to Utah. It follows the pony express trail and some stations are still along the highway. Also see the mining towns and museums along the way.
You must visit the Resort at Red Hawk. I designed it.
Visit the city lake just off 80 on the north side. Check the Truckee River out in Reno. Lake Tahoe is just up the road.
Take 445 north from Sparks. There are dozens of wonderful unmarked but well graded dirt roads to the north and west of 445.
Lassen north of Sparks has hot springs. Take Highway 70 into the mountains and explore the side roads.
Take Alt. 395 south to Carson City, far more interesting than 580.
Virginia City is a must see as well.
There are many other things around Sparks to keep you busy for years.
Sacramento is a day trip away for shopping and seeing the sights and capitol.
See the Donner party site.
There are so many places in the Sierra Nevadas to explore on the back roads.
I loved the area and hated to leave but things happen. Again visit the Resort at Red Hawk and explore my creation.

At Lee Vining, CA 120 is the Back Door to Yosemite. It is only open from the Spring to Fall and closes after the first few snowfalls (or the first BIG multi foot one) all winter. I couldn't agree more about 395.

PM me, neighbor. I'd be delighted to do some photography with you.

Local parks are ideal for bird photography. Check out Teglia's Paradise Park on Oddie and El Rancho. Four ponds within the premises and easy access. I'll PM you.

Thanks for the info. I do not socialize on the web, but information is appreciated.
We shall get on the road as soon as the snow clears!
It is so peaceful and beautiful when it snows. We have not had the pleasure to live in such a climate since Florida and Arkansas.
Absoltutely herrlich! (Sorry, the German is coming out)
