Thats the only way we travel. Hate the major highways going through the large cities, rather visit the small home towns. I remember once the wife (the navigator) asking me (while looking at the map) what does the dotted line means.. turns out it was an old logging road that drove right past old farm houses and a major river. We still have those old maps, but we've been slowly upgrading to an offline navigation system for our tablet.

When the Air Force moved out of Harlingen the world ended and so did roads in Texas. Find some "two tracks" and be happy with them.

You'll have to pardon my ignorance but what's a two track?

You are correct. The county roads will take you to some great places. If you come across a dirt road it is usually a private road. At least twice a year my daughter and I head out for a weekend of driving county roads in different areas. This one was taken off a county road in central Texas near Hico.

I got out today and drove some county roads but came up empty. I found out later that some sugar cane fields were being burned today. If I had been in the right place at the right time I could have caught those, that might have been interesting to see as well as photograph. I found the county roads to be mighty narrow though. Does one just park on the county road to take pics here? There weren't many places to pull off.

I was driving down a narrow county blacktop today that suddenly became a dirt road (dry and pretty smooth) which then turned into a rather crooked and rougher dirt road, and for a mile or two I was wondering if I should not have gone that way. About the time I thought I was crazy for not turning around, I found myself at a stop sign at a highway intersection. Crazy!!!

If I can't pull of onto a shoulder I usually try and find a driveway reasonably close and walk back. Most of the fields are going to have drivable gated access to the road at some point so they can get into the fields. There is usually just enough room to park in front of the gates.
