A detail from the neg BW.

I like the way it presents itself. I just increased the contrast a little and picked up a little more sharpness overall.

Again best seen in Download.
Ah, now we've broken free of all constraints. Love it!

Here's a second version of this exercise in which I darkened the sky and increased the haze in the middle a bit because I think I reduced it too much in my first try. Lots of fun. Thanks again for posing the challenge.

So glad you're enjoying; I certainly am I do think it's best to not fight that dusty haze.

For those who aren't familiar, For Your Consideration section has a weekly "My Image/Your View" challenge. The winner posts the following week's entry. People submit their edits - which can be highly imaginative and not restricted in any way - to the thread over several days, and then voting occurs.

This week's voting started yesterday. See the sticky topic at top of this page:
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-119-1.html

The schedule:
- voting closes on Sunday night
- Sunday or Monday the winner posts a pic for editing
- submissions close on Thursday night, at which time voting begins

You will always find the current thread at top, or near top, of the FYC home page.

Oooooohh - what fun! So glad you pushed this out to everyone, Linda! I agree with Keni that your color version is magical, but this shot just has so much great texture and visual differences inside it, i really thought it could carry B&W nicely as well. I am a complete neophyte at this, but here's my take. I started and ended in LR, with some help from NIK also.

Here is my version. I made the conversion to B&W with ON1 then took the file into Photoshop and darkened the mountains but not the sky using Camera raw.

Thanks Jim. I'm liking that near-white sky. It makes the the line of the hills really stand out.

Many thanks to everyone for posting their edits! We have skies from white to "replaced," some chose to emphasize the dust, some to soften it more; the hills go from light to dark and back again, the grasses sharp to sharper. Most chose to make the flowers bright and distinctive, and one went negative image

My personal take-away from the exercise is that this scene, as composed, isn't ideal for b&w conversion. If I were shooting for a b&w result, I think I'd be most interested in a close-up of the tangle of flowers against the fence, fence post and textured grass.

I think the background of the original composition becomes a little too busy with just shades of gray to separate them from each other and the foreground.

If anyone is still tuned in, I'd love to hear your own impressions! Again, thanks for your time and interest.

Your color rendition is very good!! As you know, I've been piddling with black & white and appreciate this exercise. I've attached my version, done in PS.

I-fox and Bruce, thank you for your edits! I did a little wrap-up with my thoughts a bit earlier. Please feel free to expand and discuss the points.

Linda, thank you for your insight. This was a productive and fun exercise. I, for one, would love to see more of this!! You may not want to be 'that' involved, and I would understand that. But, if you got enjoyment out of it, and have a hankering to do it again, please do!!
