Wouldn’t need the scanner to do that. The answer is nothing. Some thieves scrape off serial numbers. Most don’t.
The question for you to consider is, “Do you want to increase the chances of getting your stuff back by 50 times? Or not?”
If not, don’t bother with it.
Uh, you are quoting advertising: "increases the chances of recovery by 50 times".
"For a great low rate you can get on-line go to the General and save some time!"
So the question is: Do you want to save time or not?
Actually, no. The real question is: why should be believe advertising, when no
independent evidence is offered to support it? "Builds strong bodies 12 ways."
"Four out of five doctors recommend..." etc.
A driver's license number engraved on a metal surface (as many police departments
recommend) is difficult to remove. UV ink is much easier to remove.
A lot of property is stolen by professional theaves, and received by professional
fences. They know their business. I'd be very surprised if a fence didn't have a
blacklight pen.
As human beings, we are socially conditioned (and perhaps biologically predisposed)
to believe those who live in our den/hut/house. Unfortunately, one of the voices we
hear there is the TV set....
To survive in a unregulated commerce environment, it helps to be skeptical of
advertising. Othrwise, you end up with a house full of Ginsu knives, Chop-o-Matics,
Pet Rocks, Hula-Hoops, and GLH-9 Great Looking Hair in a Can.
