Z6 - Something strange?

It was very quiet when I was shooting today. I noticed a low noise almost like a fan. It turned out it was coming from the 800mm. It only stopped when I either turned off VR on the lens or the camera shuts off. I just checked and it was the same with the 200 - 500 Nikkor.

Anyone else encounter this.

It was the tiny motor for the VR in the lens.

Thanks. Isn't it strange that it's on all the time? I double checked with a DSLR and all is quiet.

On the Z6, if lens VR is on, you need to also turn off camera VR on your screen. The Z6 powers both sensor and lens VR.

Although I thought it would power for a limited time after focus engagement.

Thanks. I waited for it to turn off by itself, but that only happened when the camera shut down.

I just shut it off on the lens and it also shut the camera VR off. I find the manual switch easier because I can find it without looking.

Live view cameras need that difference,
cuz SLRs don't do half-press release nor
shutterless recording.

The Z6 is not a DSLR. It is mirrorless.

I didn’t think turning off the lens VR switch turned off the sensor VR. But I think turning off the camera VR does turn off the lens VR, even if the lens switch is on. I tried searching the manual and did not get enlightened. I’ll play with it.

I find the touch screen easier. I can’t keep track of buttons. And the screen is lighted. I’d mix up the VR switch with the AF switch at least half the time.

Yes.

I don't have a Z6 (Yet). However in a quiet environment, I hear a noise when VR is active, on all of my cameras. With my OM-D it is a "hissing" sound. With my Nikons it is more of a mechanical sound of servos adjusting.

Part of the reason why battery life in mirrorles cameras aren't nearly as long as in DSLR's.

I know what it is. But with my DSLRs it isn't engaged the entire time the camera is on, even without touching any buttons.

That does seem odd. I would not expect VR to be continuously on.

On my Olympus cameras I can set autofocus to be on continuously or only when I half press the shutter button. Any chance the Z6 can do that, and that VR is on if autofocus is on? (The Olympus cameras only run their VR when the shutter button is pressed, even if autofocus is always on, but maybe Nikon is different.)

I'll have to check that out. It is not a typical setup for Nikon DSLRs, nor with the native Z lenses.

Thanks for the response.
