First, she must have the camera in one of the creative modes like M, Av, Tv. Then press the menu button and usually they call it Custom Functions. You should be able to see some things or icons along the top of the menu and it will be found in one of the drop down menus on the right side of all the different menu choices. Or just use the manual and look up custom functions. There may also be custom functions on the LCD. There is on both of my Canon camera bodies. 5D IV and 7D II. Good luck.

Look in the manual under custom functions: shutter/AE Lock button.
I think that's where it was in my T1i manual.

Go to the user manual for the Custom Functions. For either Rebel model, it's C.Fn IV. For the T4i, the set-up is found on page 297, where setting 1 of options 0 - 3 will enable BBF.

Does she own a users manual for the camera? If not one can be downloaded easily using your favorite browser and search engine.

Yes the camera manual is a tough read, but it is highly recommend to read it cover to cover when buying a new camera, then refer to it after that when specific questions arise.

Interesting that we all call it BBF, each manufacturer calls is something else.
You just have to know what to look for...

Go to Google and search for: Back Button Focus:canon t4i or t5i.
Many sites this one seems to be good and clear to follow for Canon:
