My shutter is half stuck

I put my Nikon d750 in a cheap case and carried it on a plane to our recent vacation. When I bent down to pick something up it slipped off my shoulder and hit the ground (total distance about 6 inches - not a big drop). Later when I tried to take a photo, the image was 2/3 covered with a black shape - rectangular with the corners blocked off. Every. Photo. Sadly, I put the camera away. I was hoping it was the lens (I had my basic nifty 50 on) but upon my return home, I swapped out the lens and had the same issue. Part of the image is visible and is in focus and exposed according to the settings I use but the blocked portion (about 2/3 of the photo) is still there. So it is the camera. Anyone have an idea of what's going on? I imagine I'm going to have to take it in to be repaired. The other thing that makes me so mad about this is I'm 50+ and before I left my mom said "don't take that fancy camera on your vacation!" I guess no matter the age, mom is always right!

Is it the shutter or is the mirror sticking?

Sounds to me as if the mirror is not getting out of the light path. It's a job for a repair technician on the camera body not the lens.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like the mirror needs adjustment.
I use APS, they are Nikon Authorized repair

OMG!!!! I took the lens off and put the shutter speed at 1 second. The mirror was not moving. I gave it a little tap and it "unstuck"!!!! PERFECTION! Thanks for the tip on the mirror.

Why did it stick? May need adjustment if it happens again.

It started sticking after a hefty bump/short drop. I put it on continuous mode and took a series of photos and it hasn't done it again since my gentle nudge. So far ... so good! Definitely going to keep a lookout for future trouble with it though.

I was going to recommend this when I saw your follow-up post here.
The mirror can easily stick like that after a drop as the lower mirror stops are short and designed not to infringe upon the image. Simply taking off your lens and looking at the mirror/shutter in action is the very first diagnostic step that should be taken anytime there is an image coverage issue. Glad you got it going again. You should not have any more issues providing you don't drop it again1

check your lens hood it sounds like it got turned so the pettles are not on top and bottom but out to the corners or sides...

Don’t tell Mom about your camera problem. Just tell her everything was fine. Moms love to be right.
