A news years hike into Upper Bidwell Park and found these Native American Mortars where they would grind seeds and acorns.
They just fascinate me.

I'll bite. I've used mortars in the army, and I've laid many a brick, but what is this mortar and the holes in them?

Thanks. Many NAs ground acorns and washed the flour, Chumash, and eastern factions as well.
What did they use for the pestle?

Thanks. Learned something new.

My wife's family brought a brass mortar and heavy pestle from Eastern Europe more than a century ago. It was well used, and likely for forest mast and sundry there, back then.

Nice post karno! These California foothill mortars have interested me since my childhood. This was a communal activity and the same sites were used for many generations. When I visit these sites I always think of all the social inteaction and years and years of conversations that took place here. Thanks, well done. I enjoy your view of our small part of the world.
