Hello everyone, I have begun learning my new Nikon D7200, its also my first dslr camera. I also bought the book Mastering the Nikon D7200 to help me figure it out, and one thing at least so far that I am unclear about from the manual and book is how to use the card slots. I understand their purpose and how they can be set up, I would like to set them up so that slot 1 is for raw and slot 2 is for jpeg. The part I am not clear on is if I do that does their need to be a card in both slots. I know their will be times that I only want to shoot in jpeg, and for those times is it possible to just leave out the card in slot 1.

Not gospel but as far as I know you must have a card in the #1 slot. Set slot 1 for jpeg images. You must tell the camera what to do.

You might have to test the scenario to confirm what happens as the manual is unlikely to confirm what will happen when a card is missing. I have a different camera / different brand, but I have the same RAW > card1 & JPEG > card2 configuration. I've confirmed that if I remove one of the cards, the camera will not record any images. This issue is the configuration cannot be satisfied where the instructions say to write files to both cards for each image. This is different from a spill-over config where the camera will operate with just one card.

My understanding concurs with CHG_CANON about using both slots and also the settings he lists.
Good luck.
I've got a D7200 and its been a great camera that's helping me be a better photographer.

Thank you, so always card in slot 1, but no card in slot 2 if set to overflow.

Check the manual, but I think that you'll want to have another card in Slot 2 for overflow. You also may want to set that second card for Jpeg.

Honestly, unless you're trying to maximize the FPS for some very specific situation, just have two 'fast' cards of the same type / brand in both slots, RAW to one, JPEG to the other, and don't worry about creating potential problems by changing settings or arriving to a location without both card slots occupied.

My D750 will save pictures as long as there is a card in either shot. I shoot raw and have each card save the images, so if I have only one card in the camera, it still saves what I shoot. You can easily experiment and see if the camera will work with only one card.

My cards won't be in until Friday, so I will try experimenting with it then.

Choose menu then shooting then drive down to storage choice. One of the choices is slot 1 RAW, slot 2 JPG
Good luck, I just got a used D7200 for $429 with 5900 shutter clicks. Am learning to use it now.

I shoot raw mostly. I have my 7200 set as #2 for overflow when 1 is full then it starts writing to #2.

I'd keep a card in the slot if you tell it to write to it. I'm unsure what it would do, but for sure it would not save the image to that card.

Similar results. Experiment. On my D850, if I set the primary (XQD) card to Raw and secondary (SD) card to JPEG, then remove the primary card, the secondary recorded the Raw file, not JPEG. Your camera may be different. It's a simple task to read the manual and experiment. You won't break your camera.

i keep my d7200 set to slot 1 raw and slot 2 JPEG...if no card in slot 1 then slot 2 records raw files...i keep the JPEG files until i have taken the raw files off card 1 and put in 2 other places. Once i am satisfied the raw files are secure i then format the slot 2 card...It serves as a good backup while in the field...
