Traveling through NM this weekend and stopped to visit the Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Area and it was closed to vehicular traffic due to hazardous conditions and frozen over like the tundra, however foot traffic was still allowed but even then footing was treacherous. Major cold and snow storms had its effect on the Bosque. it was about 12 degrees and wind blowing ~10-15 mph...brrrr. Took a short walk around the first lake and it was totally frozen with little waterfowl in this area except in the canals which had some running water. Eagles on the dead tree in the middle at least 400 years out and a few other critters were scrambling.
A few Northern Shovelers, sparrows and hawks were plentiful. I could hear the cranes and geese in the far distance but it would have been a long hike to get there and didn't want to really feel like an Eskimo...
