I'm with you on out of camera colors, especially for jpegs, which these were. I usually have the camera set for "standard" color but these may have been on "vivid" setting. Exif doesn't give me that info, but I was surprised by the deep reds in these photos and that is why I made that comment. However, colors in this area do tend toward the deep reds.

P.S. Almost forgot, I cropped this photo with the road starting from the right hand corner and then to run diagonally up through the photo to get the effect you describe.
