I use a Nikon D7100 set up this way:
1/ BBF with auto ISO.
2/ Centerweighted metering (,most of the times)
3/ Fn button programmed to AE lock
4/ AF-C with 9 group
5/ VR on
6/ ISO set to be seen in the viewfinder instead of shutter count

What I learned:
Not any tripod is 100 % stable! =leave VR on all the time. I have tried with and without VR and can’t notice any difference!
Shoot at least a 2 picture burst! The second pic is 99% of the time the sharpest!
Use the delayed mode, set to 3 s when using a tripod with or without remote shutter release. (I use the infrared release. ML-13,for this)
With centerweighted metering I usually measure with the camera tilted to the ground and then lock AE with the Fn button and recompose. Works for me!
..... among other things.

I forgot to mention that I always shoot in manual mode.😋
