I am getting back into taking photos. I currently own the Canon EOS Rebel XSI with the following lenses. Canon EF-S18-55 3.5 IS,
Canon EF-2 18-200 3.5 IS and an older Canon EF 50mm 1.8 (not IS) I don't want to go too over board, but would like to step up a bit. Also any suggestions on the next lens that I would benefit from. I don't usually shoot portraits but won't rule it out. Thanks.

I believe you are looking at this all wrong.
Your next step should be to got out and shoot with what you have.
Buying anything new will not help you become any better, so no benefit.
Start with what you have, and then it will become very obvious if you need or want additional lenses or equipment to help you improve your skills.

But if you have money to burn, there will be no shortage of suggestions here on UHH.

I have been shooting scenery, florals, pets, architecture, and random stuff, but I would like to develop my skills in shooting street photography. people, urban decay, etc.

Not quite sure of my budget. Don't want to go over the top and invest in something I am not doing for a living, but would like to have better quality photos. Will I achieve this by using a better camera? I don't want to get into equipment that is too complicated either. I feel as tho I have a decent eye. Composition skills are pretty good. Just looking for maybe a finer product. Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

You have all you need. Spend money on a multi-day workshop that teaches photography in the areas in which you have an interest.

It ain't the gear at your level.

Thanks. I have an opportunity to spend a day with a photographer friend - one on one - and I am going to take him up on the offer, followed by a few workshops. Good advice - thanks. I feel so much richer right now!

I have an offer from a photographer friend to spend the day "shooting" one on one. I am taking him up on the offer followed by workshops and a few classes as suggested. Thanks for the advice. I was confused as to my focus but everyone on this forum has been very honest and has set my thinking straight. Thanks. I feel so much richer already!

Continue to shoot with what you have. You will soon learn for yourself IF you need more equipment. FWIW, your focus on urban decay is admirable, but be careful; you can irritate a lot of separate factions. My guess is most of those shots will be taken with your 50mm because it is less obtrusive and it will get the job done.

Also, go back and re-read CaptainC's advise.

the 50mm is my plan. I will be careful, thanks. I have read Captain C's remark and have made my decision to do exactly that!

Hi Murphy!
You are really getting some great advise here, which in this case is very little advise! You are at a wonderful stage in photography, where you learn alot about the craft...and alot about yourself. Every photo you take right now, with what you have, will help you when you get to needing a new piece of equipment. Many of us in photography are at least some sort of gadget freak, I am. It takes great care that the gadgets do not overshadow the objective.
Post photos you like, and see if all of us do, too.
Post photos you don't like, and see if others have ideas to improve them.
Oh...and have a great time doing it!
