While casually reading, and commenting on, todays UHH posts, I got the idea to see just how big I could blow up a picture and still have it hang together. Basic info: DX camera. Nikon D7100. 24mgs. 12-24 Nikon Lens. ISO 1600, handheld. 1/45th sec. F8. The full shot was not cropped. There has been some normal PP, including some sharpening and noise reduction. (75 and 75). A 17x25 inch print hangs on my wall and looks pretty nice. I sent this file, with lightroom adjustments, to PS. PS says 4000x6000px and 240PPI. I blew it up to 8 feet by 10 feet. I cut out an 8x10 inch section of it, made a PSD file from that and sent it back to LR. I did a little noise reduction on this super cropped version. (65) and printed it. From 5 feet away I can read the words on the ketchup bottle and almost read the watch on the guys wrist.
What I got from all this was what I have always preached. It is more about technique than gear. If you can get it sharp and nail the exposure, you can pretty much do anything with your file.

Also the detail of the black trim on the black train. We have come a long way both in equipment and user techniques. Nice experiment.
Very interesting experiment. Pretty cool.
I didn't know a PSD file could be made once the layers had been compressed. How can one be made from a print?

When I first taught digital photography, I would explain to the students that Digital Photography was almost as good as film photography, but as time went on I had to change that to better than film. Your experiment is proof of that. Good work.👍

Anything can be a PSD file. If you work on a RAW photo in PS, it can be saved as anything except RAW. If you save as a PSD you can retain the layers if you want. Or you could flatten it. If you save as a jpg it will flatten. Saving a print as a PSD? Easy. Scan it. Put it in PS. Save as /PSD. PSD files don’t have to have layers but most do.
