A weathered Cypress stump on a Florida Gulf Coast beach is a reminder of the destructive power of a hurricane.

Still Trying some B&W. This old cypress seemed to have lots of textures that I thought would work as a B&W.
It is up to you folks to decide if it works. Looks much lighter on my monitor. Please view in download.

My granddaughter say there is a badger head (profile), a bulldog head (profile) and a horseface (straight on)near the top of the tree stump. Took me a while to find them...

The subject is well spotted, but I'm finding the diffuse haloing (due possibly to Clarity and/or Contrast) a bit distracting.

Larry, this is quite nice. It looks like a long exposure. The textural and tonal values are very complimentary to the scene and subject. Yes, I can see the same as your granddaughter. She is quite observant.

Thanks. Still learning this BW conversion stuff. This is only my second try at it. Tried to build contrast---looks like I went a bit too far. Lesson learned.

A terrific subject for conversion IMO. Hope you're enjoying your explorations, Larry. As you have found already, editing for b&w is a whole different animal

Have you ever done a Google image search? With Chrome browser I can right-click your photo and select "search Google for image." Below the initial information will be a link to "visually similar images." Some are laughably not similar to your pic, but some are the same subject (in b&w) and may be of interest for you to study the pp.

I think this picture has potential. For me, I would like to see a little more foreground in particular and a little less overall cropping. The stump has some distracting fringing that might be due to over sharpening. The top left edge has some dark sky behind it which bothers me. The sky has two reflections on the ocean. I would expect one but not two like that.

treadwl nice shot. Looks like Lover's Key north end of beach. I live nearby and go there often. Sometimes no clouds sometimes great sunsets. I really like it at high tide when this and the others are in the water making for a great long exposure. Last year I shot several of the old trees and printed them very large on canvas. Showed them at an art show and got good reviews. Keep posting. Thanks, JH
Edit - would love to post my shots of this location for y'all to compare. Maybe later.

I know (now) that I over did this. I just lost track trying to build the contrast and clarity. I'll remember next time. There was a big storm blowing in and there were some very dark clouds which turned to rain not long after this was taken There were two gaps in the clouds which accounted for the two reflections. It was one of the things that drew me to this angle. Neither lasted very long and the clouds were really moving.

I have more foreground with the original But as this for me, was about working on the conversion, I just wanted the tree to be large.

You are right on the location.
I would love to see your images. I live on the east side of Florida so this was a long drive The tides were not in my favor, but I'll be back.
