When internet shopping for a spare battery for my Nikon D7200, I see the prices range from $19 to almost $60 for what appears to be the same one. Some with higher mh are less than those with less mh. Can someone give me a lesson of battery 101? Ken.

Chinese knock offs = $19
Official OEM = $60
Check the description carefully.

I've found the "Promaster" line a decent choice and a great value. I had several for our D3200s and just bought a couple of backups for my D7100. I got a new OEM one at almost the same time, and I rotate them regularly with "1,2,3" labels, always changing them when they get to exactly 25%. We'll see if there's enough difference in lifespan to make them a value, but in terms of shots per charge, I'd say they are no different from the Nikon OEMs. They do seem to take a little longer to charge, but I usually charge them two at a time in a two slot charger.

I have had good results with non OEM brands. In particular, Vivitar, CS Power.

I’ve had good success with Wasabi brand from Amazon.com. Pro master I’ve seen in a number of brick and mortar camera shops, sort of a house brand and seems to be okay stuff. I also have several Nikon batteries that have never failed either.

Perhaps not....but I'll put money on the fact that the major manufacturers have rigid specifications for build and performance....and likely only have their batteries made by companies that produce high-quality products. Generally, you get what you pay for.

I've used generic batteries in everything for as long as I can remember. No problems so far.

Likewise for me. I have two Wasabi batteries. No noticeable difference from the Nikon. Used on a D7000.

I always use a NIKON battery. Nikon recommends it and so do I.

I have used Vivitar batteries on my D5300 and Wasabi on my D7000 in addition to OEM batteries and see no difference in number of shots or charging rates.

I just bought a "used" Nikon battery for my D7100 for $24.00 (listed as "like new") delivered from MPB.com (they had about 50 of them before Christmas). I had it 2 business days later, looks brand new, reads at 100% ( I bought a couple like that for my D90s and the contact tabs had no marks/marring - had possibly never even been in a camera)....I'll buy another from them if I need one.

Check out MPB/B&H and all the other major camera dealers...I have been buying "like new" Nikon and Sony batteries for cheap for sometime, none has failed me, or lost capacity....can't say the same about 3rd party, although they can be adequate (I've bought Wasabi/Watson/Power Tech/Vivitar, and others, etc., they have been good to OK, but do not hold up long term like the MFG batteries, they don't use the "highest quality" cells like the Nikon or Sony demand). Just know this, all rechargeable batteries are not created equal, whether for cameras, R/C, toys, flashlights, etc. That's my take, and my hobbies are very battery heavy, I have many, many rechargeable types, some used in brutal conditions - NiCad, NIMH, LIPO, LION.
ymmv.
