I don't care what you well people say about how great a well is but I would just as soon pay the municipal district for water and sewer service rather than having to deal with a well and/or a septic system.

Of course it goes without saying that you can do just that. My two places had no city, or anything else, source of water. It was a well or nothing at all. Not all of us want to ever live in a city.

We also have a well for our water supply. Local gubbermint discussed this last year of putting meters on our wells as a source of income. Next they'll be putting little meters on our nostrils to tax the amount of air we breath.

Our county water costs $210 per year for our family of 5, (including a teenager who takes 2 20 minute showers every day!)

There's no such thing as a 20-minute shower in this house. : )

Nice shot, We usually do the walkway across the Rondout at least once a summer.

Thanks for complimenting me for choosing a nice photo from online. Although I didn't take that shot, I have taken hundreds in that area.

Like most people in this area, I have well water. Yesterday morning, the pump, two hundred feet below the surface, decided to retire. After a couple of phone calls, a plumber came and took a look. Sure enough, the pump was dead. His crew will be arriving later to replace the pump and take almost $6,000 from me.

When I think of the cameras I could have bought...

That's way overpriced,if its just the pumg and the pipes are still ok, then they can reuse the pipes. And if it is as shallow as you said, that's a job for about an hour for a couple of guys and a pick up!

In most U.S. communities that provide water service there are actually 2 charges for water: one chg. for the municipality to deliver the water to the customer; another chg. to take it away (also known as a sewer bill). A real screw-job for folks who have in-ground irrigation systems. The water IS free but the delivery chgs. are real killers. The delivery chgs. from my well to the house is nil, and THAT is as free as it gets in today's world. AND, it is untreated with fluoride!

But if you have city water you never have to think about it. You just turn the faucet and clean water magically comes out. The only time you ever have to worry about it is if something goes wrong like if a main breaks or the city is replacing the pipes. And they test the water and make sure it's healthy to drink (unless you live in certain communities in Michigan). I don't see how that's a screw job. Somebody has to pay for all that infrastructure that delivers it and takes it away. It ain't free.

With tongue firmly in cheek, I can’t help but wonder what an Archimedes screw is. Is there foreplay involved or is it more like rodeo sex? I have never heard that term.

They would have to pretty good sized guys!!! 200ft of steel pipe is darn heavy and sched.80 plastic isn't light. my pump weighs almost 40# by its self.

We pay for water (from Aqua) based on usage and average around $800/year and have had hefty increases over the years. So, if your pump lasts longer than roughly 7 years then you're making out better than us.

Same here in FL. Not only that, but we have to have a water softener($1200) and we're on our 2nd one in 15 yrs, and an RO system for the drinking water because the city water has so much chlorine and ammonia added it tastes terrible!

When I lived on Long Island, we paid for water.

Your water comes from practically across the street from me - the Ashokan Reservoir.

On eastern LI(where I come from) the water bill was $25 for three months and wasn't metered. Very little disinfectant needed because it was pretty cold out of the tap. Here in FL it comes out most of the year over 85 degrees so lots of disinfectant is added, then we pay for it to be removed by using an RO system. The water bill is a penny a gallon.
