This is becoming like a scene from Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Raven", except that in this version, it is an Owl! He appears to be stalking me, arriving every morning at about 8AM and sitting on the same branch until about 11AM. And he let me get closer yesterday, so I may try to get closer yet. Although it is raining like a son-of-a-gun this morning, so I am uncertain whether he will continue to appear.

Years ago, there was a hawk that did this similar kind of thing - appearing to stalk me, while I was stalking him. And I thought of getting him in closer and baited him with some fairly expensive shrimp. In my wilder thoughts, I considered whether it was possible to get him to eat out of my hand. I started by leaving the shrimp on the railing of the deck to try to get him in closer and with me not there, then I thought I would gradually introduce myself to the scene. I REALLY, strategically thought this through. The shrimp disappeared. I became excited. I put more shrimp out. It disappeared with increasing speed, but I had not yet seen the hawk take the bait. That was because it was not the hawk, at all. The damned squirrels noticed the shrimp before the hawk did!!! At about the same time, I read several articles about the dangers and ethics of baiting wildlife in an effort to get a photo, so I gave up. I will have to satisfy myself with just stalking.

Thanks for the comments.

Nice capture of a barred owl. Since it is raining you will be able to get very
close because owl's can't fly when their soaking wet. Give the owl some space
when raining. You're getting some great shots, keep them coming D2B2.

Wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing your photography with us, he is a beautiful fellow indeed, I just love seeing owls, although I've never seen any in our area so I live vicariously through your photos. Please keep sharing

Barred owls have expanded into our area. They have wiped out most of the spotted owls in western Oregon over several years now. They are larger and far more aggressive than the spotted species. They are so pervasive the state game commission is culling them as fast as they have funds for. All other owls are strictly protected. This migration has been caused by habitat changes east of us. My son is a wildlife biologist so this explanation is from him. Good looking bird regardless.

Thanks, so much. I actually have to WORK today, so looking for a shot in the rain is out of the question. I don't want to be so pervasive that I cause him to leave the area. So I think I will give it a rest for a couple of days in the hope that he stays around.
