We are going to the Lofoton Islands in early March. Since it is in the Arctic Circle it will be cold, typically between 19 and 35 degrees F. We are looking for recommendations on gloves that will keep our hands warm and still allow for camera adjustments. We have done some research and have not found any definitive answers. Hopefully some UHH members have used and can recommend or pan some gloves.

For cold weather, I wear polypropylene glove liners under mittens that fold back to reveal my fingers and thumb. Think I got the mittens at a shooting (gun) supply place.
Something like THESE should work.

They’re called Flip mittens. Like already mentioned, buy at a gun store or on line at Scheels.com

Hard to beat these gloves for extreme cold conditions.

Wool flip open mittens with glove liners work great...I live in Montana and the weather here gets colder than that. I also invest in a case of hand warmers each fall...love those things! I keep one in my battery pack with my spare batteries when we are out and about...the cold weather drains the battery pretty fast.

Colder, but not as damp. I've been close to tears in 0°c no matter what level of protection I employ. What we need are pogies for photography. I use them on my bike and kayak and essentially they are giant mitts that you secure around the handle bars or paddle shaft. This allows you to use your naked hand (or lightly gloved) inside a fitted enclosure. If not already made we need a double entry one with single exit for camera lens.

Wool glove liners, with flip type mittens over them, worked well for me on my trips to both Iceland and Alaska, in similar temps.

I went to EMS and challenged them to find something when shooting a large format camera (lots of little knobs). They sold me a good pair of heavy duty mittens with separate liners. I can take the mittens off but keep the liners on. It worked well on a New Hampshire hilltop at 17 degrees with a fresh wind. They are tough enough to be used for anything outdoors and there is no zipper across my palm like the zip off finger mitts.

I have a pair of Hot Headz mittens where the top and thumb tip flips back. They’re polar fleece. The best thing about them is that the pocket meant to hold the flipped back mitten top works perfectly to hold a hand warmer on the top of your hand so it doesn’t get in the way of using your hands. They are not good in cold rain.

I have these as well...hard to beat. Needed them in Alaska doing Northern Lights with 15 below, blowing wind AND the hand warmers stuffed into them. I find I can use the flip mittens with a liner glove as also mentioned if it is above 20 degrees. The demands of the shoot are a consideration...heavy and constant without breaks to put hands in coat pocket and rewarm with hand warmers as an example. I have sensitive to cold fingers...there is an individual tolerance to cold to consider.

These are great for the temperatures you are talking about. When it gets below zero I like to use big poofy mittens and just take them off for shooting and put them back on when I am done.

I have a pair of their Skadi zip mittens that I am taking to Nordegg in Alberta, nighttime temperature can be -25 f. You need an Arctic glove for minus f. temperatures. I have been to Lofoton, Iceland and Greenland in 25 - 30 f. snowy weather and a good hunters glomitt with a hand warmer was enough to keep you comfortable. Make sure you have foam wraps for your tripod handholds, the tripod feels like an ice cube otherwise.
