I have just tried to use Unsharp Masking (PS Elements 11) on an image in both jpg and psd. Unsharp masking is grayed out either way. What am I doing incorrectly?

I think you need to provide additional and more specific information on your issue before anyone can help you. I use PS, not Elements, and use Filter, Other, and High Pass to sharpen images. I make a second layer, determine the degree of masking, which is always gray, and then use the overlay filter, which turns the image back to normal. Is this what you are referring to????

Thanks for responding. By grayed out, I meant that the USM tool in the pull down menu is gray/not active.

Aaahh! For that, I have no answer and hopefully someone else will! Did you do some trouble-shooting, i.e., trying it on another image? Sometimes that helps to narrow down the problem. Good luck.

In version 15 I have to select USM under enhancements before I can use it in filters.

Reboot-reboot- everything appears to be currently functioning.

There is a forum dedicated to PSE. www.photoshopelementsandmore.com. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Bet they can help you.

Be sure to make a copy layer to work on. Some tools won’t let you edit the background layer.

I use PS and I have experienced the greyed out filter elements, including USM, when I tried to use them on an editing layer mask, such as exposure, curves, etc. I have also seen USM simply open up white with no info, if I have inadvertently selected the layer mask icon of a layer mask created from a pixel layer. The filters need to be used on a pixel layer.

Hope that helps.

This must be the answer.
Thanks Everyone
