I am noticing some vigenetting when shooting wide open...is that the lens or a setting.? I noticed at 35-say 50 there isn't any.

Wide angles tend to do that. I see "corner darkening" with nearly all my wides if I shoot wide open.

If you're using a lens hood it might be the wrong one. Take some shots with it off and if there's still vignetting then it's the lens.

This lens like most like it have this issue.
It is minimal with this lens compare to some others.
You live with it or correct it. your choice.

I had that lens for many year. That issue was apparent from day 1. But other than that little glitch it was a great lens.
Then the AF-s motor went and I sent it to Nikon. They outsourced the repair which only lasted 7 months. Nikon said sorry, we only warranty repairs for 6 months. I gave it to a neighbor who prefers manual focus. He loves it.

First of all, is the lens a 24-70mm f2.8 FX lens? Your post says 28-70 f2.8 and that may be an error. Secondly, are you using it on a full frame camera or a crop frame camera? Vignetting is common on a wide angle lens with a wide aperture setting. However, that does not seem to normally be a problem with the Nikon 24-70 2.8.

On my D800 there is a Vignetting Setting on the Shooting Menu. My best guess is that you need to check that.

Why would that be an error? The 28-70 was a very popular lens.

I do not recall a 28-70mm f2.8 lens. The 28-70mm is a slower lens. The f2.8 lens in that general zoom range are 24-70mm.

Yup- Nikon had a constant 2.8 aperture version of the 28-70.
Look HERE.

There was a slower lens (f/3.5-4.5) of that focal range HERE.
Maybe that's what you were remembering.

I bought my 28-70 f2.8 when I bought my D3 over 10 years ago. It is still an excellent lens and now this lens is on my D810 as my walk around lens.

Got a 28-70 f2.8 for use on my F4 way back when.... Lens still works great so haven't upgraded to the 24-70 f2.8. Now I use it on the D850 and I prefer to keep the 28-70 since I still use the F4 a lot, as the newer gelded lens doesn't give me the aperture control with the F4 that I get with the older non-g 28-70.

Yes it is a Nikon 28x70 AF D 2.8 lens. I shot with out a lens hood and I got the same thing. IIf I shoot between 35-50, there is no darkening in the corners. It is a fantastic lens.

By the way, Jay, did you turn Vignette Control to "On'" on your D700? If so, you may want to turn it to the highest of the 3 levels available.

It's physics. The light path to the corners through a lens is always longer than it is to the center. Light intensity (exposure) falls off with the square of the distance. With a small angle (longer lens) and/or exceptional optical design, the difference in exposure is minimized, but it's always there. The wider the lens, the greater the effect, and the more difficult (expensive) it is to correct through adjusting the optical elements and coatings.
